Obituary : Shannon Summers

Enumclaw, Washington - Shannon Wayne Summers made his transition to continue his travels on the other side on 11/14/2020, he was 54.

Shannon was born to Terry and Charlene Summers, and spent most of his childhood in Eatonville, graduating from Eatonville High School in 1984. He was active in FFA, played high school football and was elected Homecoming King his Sr. year. He was obsessed with growing giant pumpkins and grew a number of 1,000+ pound pumpkins.

Shannon married Loren Edgley in 1992 with whom he had his two beloved sons, Zackary Wayne and Casey Donavon. At just 24 years old he went on to fly for Delta Airlines where he flew for the next 30 years and was a Captain at the time of his death.

Shannon was always a daring adventurer and did everything from Mt. climbing to skydiving, and he especially loved going on new and exciting adventures with his boys, traveling around the country to fun and exotic locations even learning to scuba dive along the way. As his dad Terry said, "He packed a lot of life into his 54 years".

Shannon is preceded in death by his mother Charlene Summers. He leaves behind the two most important people in his life, Zack and Casey Summers. He is also survived by his eternal support system, his dad Terry Summers, as well as his older sister LaDonna Summers who will miss their talks about the meaning of life; they were seekers of the same Spirit. Lastly, he was survived by his beloved cat and Spirit animal Lofa, who was back in his arms again a month after he passed.

As Covid has given us a bit of a break we are finally able to celebrate Shannon's life! Please join us on November 13th from 1:00 to 5:00 for food, drinks and celebration, not to mention your personal stories that we are all eager to hear. Notification with the passing of Lieutenant Commander Warren ‘Moon’ Mowry, III, celebrated Naval Officer, Top Gun aviator and Delta pilot, age 55.  LCDR Mowry joined Delta Air Lines 12-31-1997.  He is survived by his wife Kathy, his sons and many more dear family members and friends.

Obituary : Warren Mowry, III

Lieutenant Commander Warren ‘Moon’ Mowry, III, celebrated Naval Officer, Top Gun aviator and Delta pilot tragically passed away Wednesday, October 6, 2021, at the age of 55.

 

Warren spent his early childhood in Pensacola, Florida and, after moving, graduated high school in Wilbraham, Massachusetts. He attended the prestigious Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois outside of Chicago on a Naval ROTC scholarship. He graduated in 1988 with a degree in Chemical Engineering.

 

Warren started his Navy career in Pensacola on a two-year journey to earn his “Wings of Gold.” That dream was realized in January 1991 as he was winged a Naval Aviator at NAS Meridian, MS. Achieving top rank in his Winging Class afforded him his first choice of Duty Assignments flying the F/A-18 “Hornet” out of NAS Cecil Field in Jacksonville, FL That exceptionalism continued to follow Warren throughout his Naval career as he deployed twice with the VFA-37 “Bulls” to the Mediterranean and Red Sea in support of Contingency Operations over Iraq and Bosnia. Always at the “Tip of the Spear”, he was selected for the prestigious Navy TopGun Fighter Weapons School in Miramar, California in 1994 where he honed his skills as both a supreme tactician and more importantly as an Instructor. It was as an Instructor that Warren found his true calling. He was selected as one of the initial cadre of Strike Fighter Tactics Instructors and was assigned to the Strike Fighter Weapons School, Atlantic at Cecil Field. As one of a select few responsible for developing and shaping the Tactical training of the entire F/A-18 Community, Warren influenced countless future combat pilots in the Art of deploying the F/A-18 throughout its entire range of Air-Air and Air-Ground Missions. He achieved over a thousand hours and three hundred Carrier landings flying the F/A-18 during his highly decorated Naval Career.

 

After leaving the Navy, Warren began a twenty three-year career as a pilot with Delta Airlines, based in Atlanta. In 2016, Warren was able to return to his love of teaching as a Delta pilot instructor on the Boeing 717- 200 airframe. In 2017, Warren became Chairman of the Delta Pilot Assistance Committee (DPCA). This program supports pilots struggling with alcohol and substance abuse. The program is completely confidential and acts as the much-needed liaison between the Federal Aviation Administration, Delta Airlines, and the medical community.

 

Warren was a servant leader and passionate about recovery. On a daily basis, he selflessly volunteered his time helping others with substance abuse. He was the leader in the identification, treatment, recertification and aftercare for pilots. Working on the committee for over a decade, he helped hundreds of pilots navigate their way back to the cockpit while collaborating with ALPA, Delta management and the FAA with the utmost professionalism and respect. With his empathy and compassion, he helped save careers, lives and families all over the country. He was humbly dedicated to others.

 

Warren is the proud father of two sons; Tyler (24) and Ryan (18). Warren and Ryan share a passion for golf. Ryan was a standout golfer at McIntosh High School in their hometown of Peachtree City, Georgia. He declined the opportunity to play at the next level to follow in his father's footsteps. Like Warren, Ryan is on a full Naval ROTC scholarship at Auburn University, majoring in quantitative economics. Tyler attended, played baseball at, and graduated from the United States Merchant Marine Academy with a commission as a Naval Reserve Officer. He majored in Marine Transportation and currently sails as a navigator aboard U.S. Merchant Vessels. The three men are as tight-knit as they come.

 

Warren is married to his wife Kathy. The two share a love for the outdoors and cherish memories of running together on the beach at sunrise. The couple split their time between living the country life on a farm outside of Atlanta and living out on Saint Simons Island where they fished on the boat that Warren had always dreamed of owning. Kathy could often be seen riding on the back of Warren’s Harley as they sped out for dinner. They loved to kayak, hike, bike and paddleboard. At the end of the evening, they enjoyed just hanging out with each other watching the sun set over the tree line on the farm.

 

Warren leaves behind is wife; Kathy Mowry, his mother; Anne Mowry, his sons; Tyler Mowry and Ryan Mowry, his sister; Jennifer Johnson, his brother-in-law; Wendell Johnson, two nieces and a nephew, three stepdaughters, and numerous aunts and uncles.

 

A Celebration of Life event will be held November 9th, 2021, at 6pm at the Delta Flight Museum in Atlanta.

NWA Capt. Delwyn Michael Roark

FEBRUARY 21, 1941 – OCTOBER 31, 2021

 

From the retired Northwest pilots group comes word with the passing of Captain Mike Roark, age 80: “…..information reporting that NWA pilot Delwyn (Mike) Roark died on October 31, 2021 after a long battle with dementia. Mike was born on Feb. 24, 1941 and was hired by NWA on March 03, 1969. Little more is known at this time, initial news from the family is that there will be a memorial service next summer. That of course is always subject to change. Mike was a delight to work with and will be deeply missed.”

From colleagues we have learned of the passing of retired Delta pilot Captain Charles Alexander Carlon, age 73.  Captain Carlon’s very good friend PSA/USAirways retired Captain Tony Badali has written and was kind enough to share Charlie’s obituary …please see below.  Captain Carlon joined Delta Air Lines  10-24-1977.  He is survived by his wife Sally plus many more dear friends and family members.

Obituary :  Capt. Charles A. Carlon, 73, flew West on his final flight on October 3, 2021. He died of complications from a

brain bleed caused by an accidental blow to his head.  

Charlie was born on July 28, 1948 in Cleveland, Ohio. His parents were LTCOL Ted Carlon and his wife Lenora. They lived in Ohio and the Chicago area suburbs until moving to Miami in 1959, where Charlie lived until his death.  He attended Christopher Columbus High , a private Catholic college preparatory school. After graduation he completed his Associate Degree at Miami Dade College and then his Bachelor of Science in Business at Florida State University.

 

Charlie’s Dad was an Air Force pilot during WW2 and stayed active flying his entire life. This was perhaps Charlie’s spark for his own passion for flying airplanes.  While at Miami Dade College, Charlie earned his FAA Private Pilot certification, the first of many licenses he would hold throughout his aviation career. After his junior year at FSU, Charlie enrolled in the United States Navy Aviation Reserve Officer Candidate program.  This program allowed him to complete the first 8 weeks of officer training prior to graduation. After graduating from FSU in 1971, Charlie completed basic officers

training and entered Navy Flight School.  During flight training and because of his high academic and flight grades, he chose the “Prop” pipeline as his best path to becoming an airline pilot after his service. He flew the T-28 and TS-2A aircraft during flight training, carrier qualified, and was designated as a Naval Aviator.  His first assignment was flying the Lockheed EP-3 Aries aircraft as a member of Fleet Air Reconnaissance Squadron One (VQ-1) at NAS Agana, Guam. As a Patrol Plane Commander, he flew electronic surveillance missions over the South China Sea, and probably some

classified locations as well.  After this tour, Charlie was assigned to Training Squadron 27 (VT-27) in Corpus Christi, Texas as a T-28 Instructor.

 

While on terminal leave from the Navy in 1977, Charlie realized another dream when he was hired to fly for Delta Air Lines. During his 27 year career at Delta, he flew the Boeing 727,737,757,767, Lockheed L-1011 TriStar, McDonnell-Douglas MD-88, and retired early as an International Boeing 777 Captain.  It was while flying for Delta that another dream came true when he met and married his beautiful bride Sally, a Delta Flight Attendant. They had many adventures

together, but one of their favorite special activities was volunteering at the Center for Great Apes in Wauchula FL.

 

Charlie was a man of many interests and talents. After taking an early retirement from Delta, he channeled his

interest in computers into becoming an Apple certified MAC Genius at an Apple retail store locally. He was

particularly revered for his ability to teach senior citizens how to use their Apple products. He also had his own

business as a technical consultant helping individuals set up personal and business computer systems.

Aviation came calling again, and Charlie found a new passion instructing at the Miami Airbus Training Center.

Here he taught the Airbus A320/330/350 in state of the art simulators to hundreds of students over his 14 years

there. When training dwindled in 2020 due to the Pandemic, he found another opportunity at the Boeing

Flight Training Center just down the road as a Boeing 767 Instructor.

 

Charlie had many great friends and associations over his very full life. He was active in the local Indian Motorcycle

Club, an aircraft owner and FAA certified Light Sport Aircraft Repairman. He was a skilled marksman and gun

owner, winning several competition shooting awards.  As an Amateur radio operator (N7CAC) Charlie acquired

all the latest greatest equipment to pursue his hobby. He was also the Key Man at the Miami Hangar of the Quiet

Birdmen for many years.

 

For Charlie there was never a project too tough to be tackled, whatever it might be. Charlie was a talented

handyman and mechanic. He could fix or build just about anything, and derived great satisfaction doing it.

Captain Carlon is survived by his wife Sally, his brothers Ted, Jerry, Christopher and sister Celine along with many

nieces and nephews.

Notification with the passing of retired Delta pilot Captain Raymond Edward Otten, age 82.  Captain Otten joined Delta Air Lines 01-05-1970 and retired with Delta based 030/ATL.  He is survived by his wife Carol and their children.

Obituary : Raymond Edward Otten

Our beloved husband and father passed peacefully after a courageous battle against Alzheimer’s disease. He was born in Hoboken, NJ but lived most of his life in the South. Ray graduated from the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy (1961); served nobly with the US Navy (Lieutenant) as an A-4 pilot on the USS F.D. Roosevelt; and retired as a Captain with Delta Airlines after 30 years.

 

Ray is survived by and loved by family: wife of 54 years, Carol Card Otten; their children, Christi Hough (husband Rob) and Steve Otten (wife Brette); sister Mary Lou Ramsey.
