From friends and colleagues, we learn of the passing of retired Northwest Airlines pilot Captain Dave Good, age 82.  Dave joined Northwest Airlines 03-24-1969.  He is survived by his son Michael.

Good moved to Port Charlotte from Clearwater in 1999. He had two grown boys, Michael and Mitchell from his first marriage. In 1996 Mitchell was killed in a motorcycle accident in Clearwater .…………………………

David Good Obituary

David Phillips Good, 82, of Port Charlotte, Florida, passed away on Saturday, January 27, 2024.

David was a USMC helicopter and Jet Pilot in the Vietnam Era and is a retired Northwest Airlines pilot.

He was a local realtor of 25 years in Port Charlotte, a friend to many who enjoyed boating and golfing outings as well as local Veterans clubs.

David is survived by his son Michael and grandson Austin, brother Bill and wife Leslie, sister Lori and family, Stepmother Vivian, girlfriend Jackie and her son Todd. He will be dearly missed.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, March 2, 2024, from 4 pm to 7 pm at the Eagles of Port Charlotte.

The Veteran's Memorial Service will be held at a later date on or before the anniversary of his Death.

Notice of passing….retired Northwest Airlines/Delta pilot Mark Charles Walton, age 71, of Chester, Virginia passed away on Tuesday, January 30th.  Captain Walton began his commercial flying 02-20-1987 and retired with Delta Air Lines.  He is survived by his siblings.

Mark Charles Walton Obituary

WALTON, Mark Charles, 71, of Chester, Va passed away peacefully, surrounded by family and friends on 30 Jan 2024 after a brief illness. He is predeceased by his parents Harry and France Walton. He is survived by sisters Colette Gailliot, Monique Walton and brother Gregg, many special cousins, and his Beloved, Valeria Murphy (babydoll). A special thank you goes out to all those who loved and supported Mark during his illness, especially his medical angel.

 

Born in Washington, DC in 1952, raised in Kensington, MD and Frankfurt, Germany. Mark graduated from The Catholic University of America in Washington, DC with a degree in Music Education. He joined the Air Force ROTC and his passion for flying "took off" from there.

 

During his tenure in the Air Force Mark flew the F-111's and was selected for the prestigious AF's Fighter Weapons School. In 1986 Mark lead the overall planning for Operation Eldorado Canyon, the longest aerial strike mission from Europe since WW II, and a decisive blow against terrorism. Returning to the United States, Mark joined the Virginia Air National Guard flying the A7 and F16 aircraft and flying combat missions in Iraq . Mark finished his military career as a Lieutenant Colonel serving his country for over 21 years.

 

After leaving the Air Force, Mark went on to fly for Northwest Airlines (now Delta) and retired as a Captain with over 30 years of service. On his final flight, loved ones were among his passengers.

 

Mark played trombone throughout his life, from high school to studying with John Marsalis at The Catholic University of America, to playing in the brass section of a DC area popular cover band in the 70's, Fancy Colours. While stationed in England, Mark played trombone in the Oxford Symphony Orchestra. He was even known to carry his trombone mouthpiece to practice for church band on his commercial flights (much to the entertainment and dismay of those around him). He kept his "chops" in shape to play for Easter and Christmas masses at his local parish, St. Michael's in Richmond until he gave up his Trombone to a special person to carry on for him.

 

Mark was like that. Generous, caring and loving to his family and the tremendous family of friends he was blessed with over the course of his life.

 

There will be no funeral at this time but a Celebration of Life will be held at a later date. Have a toast with your favorite beverage in his honor.

AUGUST 3, 1935 – NOVEMBER 28, 2023

 

Notice of passing….retired Pan Am/Delta pilot Captain Delbert Roaine Ackley, age 88, of Prescott, Arizona passed away on Tuesday, November 28, 2023.  Captain Ackley joined Pan American 01-31-1966 and retired with Delta Air Lines.  He is survived by his wife, Elsemarie (Mia) Ackley, and by his children and their families.

Delbert R. Ackley, age 88, passed away at his home in Prescott, Arizona, on November 28, 2023. He was born in Bakersfield, California, and got his bachelor’s degree from Oregon State University. A lover of all things related to flight, Del started his career with the U.S. Air Force during the late 1950s, training in the T-28s and T-33s, which prepared him for his favorite plane, the F-86-F. He then transferred to the Strategic Air Command, where he flew B-52G bombers around the top of the globe on 24-hour shifts. After the Air Force, he became a commercial pilot for Pan Am, based in San Francisco, New York, Los Angeles, and West Berlin. When Pan Am closed in 1991 he transfered a pilot at Delta Airlines until his retirement in 1995. During his career, he flew 707s, 720s, 727s, 737s, 747s, DC-8s, and A-310s. Del is preceded in death by his parents, Joseph Ackley and Ida Mae (Gates) Ackley, and his brother, Jerry Ackley. Del is survived by his loving wife, Elsemarie (Mia) Ackley; his two sons, Scott and Karl and wife Toni; his two daughters, Diane and Payton; and five granddaughters.

Notice of passing…..retired Pan Am/Delta pilot Captain Bob Ober, age 83.  Bob joined Pan American 04-25-1966 and retired with Delta Air Lines.  Bob is survived by his wife Lynda, children David and Jennifer, daughter-in-law Heather, son-in-law Steve, grandchildren Sabrina, Brandon, Carly, Joshua and Jacob and his sister Jayne.

Robert “Bob” Ober passed away on December 6, 2023.  The following was written by Dave Ober:  My sister and I owe our existence to the fateful day in 1960 when Robert “Bob” Ober — while sneaking his friend back into the University of Buffalo infirmary — mistakenly entered our mother’s room during her recovery from chicken pox.

 

Following a mischievous adolescence in which he stole an airplane, launched a rocket from inside his college dorm and ran all-night underground poker games, Bob tried his hand at professional golf until he “matured” to embark on a career as an airline pilot for Pan American and Delta airlines.

 

Bob, 83, was first and foremost a dedicated husband for six decades, sharing a lifelong love affair with Lynda that included high daily doses of laughter. A committed father and grandfather, Bob embraced his family with every fiber of his energetic and colorful existence. He had an insatiable curiosity, an enormous heart and unending generosity, spending most of his time focusing on the problems of the world and the well-being of others. Bob died on Dec. 6 of an aortic dissection.

 

Following his retirement from aviation, Bob’s second calling was teaching at the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at Stony Brook University. At OLLI, Bob enthralled his students for a dozen years by using his tireless curiosity to sprout spirited debate and brought compelling, high-profile guests to classes in current events and “law and politics.” His classes were always oversubscribed as local learners were eager to hear from the many experts he recruited to educate others and respond to his penetrating and provocative questions.

 

Bob grew up in Forest Hills, Queens, in the shadow of the U.S. Open tennis tournament where he honed his skills watching the greats and even had the good fortune to hit with some of the top pros of the day, like Pancho Gonzalez and Lew Hoad. When he wasn’t working to perfect a golf swing he spent his entire life honing, Bob found ways to defy authority and push the envelope.

Unfortunately, I need to tell you now that "Bob" Ober passed away on December 6, 2023.  It was quite unexpected.  Bob was always a quite fit and slim fellow. And he was a big tennis player.  In fact, he and his son were rated the number two father/son tennis pair in the U.S. He was scheduled to play a tournament with his son the day following his death.  

I have been in contact with the son over the last month.  Bob was having some chest pains and thought that he might be have been having a heart attack.  They took him to the hospital and found that a lining in the coronary aorta had separated from the wall of the artery.  He lived only two hours.  Sad.  He was a good guy.
