News has reached our group with the passing of Delta Golden Wings member retired Delta pilot Captain Richard Emory Colby, age 75.  Captain Colby joined Delta Air Lines 01-05-1970.  He is survived by his wife Alice, their children and grandchildren.

Obituary...............

Richard Colby passed away in Tega Cay, South Carolina on November 28, 2017 at the age of 75.

He was born in Evergreen, Alabama.

 

Richard obtained his B.S. degree from Auburn University where he was a member of Sigma Chi fraternity and was in The Air Force ROTC program. He also met his soulmate Alice Colby at Auburn University. They shared fifty-four sweet years of marriage. He received a regular commission into the U.S. Air Force where he flew the F-106 in The Air Defense Command.

 

Richard began his airline pilot career at Delta Airlines in January 1970 flying various commercial aircraft.

He became a pilot representative with ALPA( Airline Pilots Association) and later became Manager of Flight

Training and Standards. He finished his career at Delta in 1998 with the title of Vice President of Flight Operations and Chief Pilot. While at Delta Richard also served on the Board of Directors of the Delta Employees Credit Union.

 

He traveled extensively with friends on fishing , hunting, and golfing trips and still found time to start and run several successful businesses yet his priorities were always with his family especially entertaining his grand children.

 

Richard is predeceased by his parents, Elizabeth Long and Richard Brassell and half brother Fredrick Colby.

 

He is survived by his wife Alice, daughter Lauri Barnette of Lake Wylie, SC, son Lee Colby(Kathy) of Peachtree City, Ga. And grand children Erica Barnette, Colby Barnette, Payton Colby, and Greyson Colby, sister Elizabeth Jones(Carroll) of Annandale, VA., sister Lauren Carter of Belen, NM, Half brother Ricky Brassell of Crestview, FL. and sister in law Diane Colby of Gulf Breeze, FL.

 

There will be a memorial service Wednesday Dec. 6, 2017 at New River Church at 136 Carroll Cove Rd. Lake Wylie, SC. 29710. Service at 2:00 with reception to follow.

 

The family suggest that contributions be sent to the Lewy Body Dementia Association 912 Killian Hill Rd. S.W. Lilburn, Ga.30047.

WC/RW   WWII veteran, Capt. F. Joseph ‘Joe’ Buskirk

News with the passing of an aviation pioneer, WWII veteran and RNPA member, retired pilot Captain Frank Joseph ‘Joe’ Buskirk, just shy of his 98th birthday.  Captain Buskirk began his commercial flying career 05-25-1946, survived the various mergers and retired with Hughes Airwest.  Widowed January 1st, 2016 with the passing of his wife Ellen, Joe is survived by their children, their grand- and great grandchildren.  Joe & Ellen had most recently resided in Redmond, Washington.

Obituary...........

Captain F. Joseph Buskirk (Hughes Air West, ret.) died peacefully on November 9th in Redmond WA, one month short of his 98th birthday.

Joe was born Frank Joseph Buskirk on December 6, 1919, in Montrose, CO.

Always a hard worker, he was proud to have had a paper route (age 5), served as an Alter Boy at St. Mary’s Catholic Church & worked at Anderson’s drug store for much of his school years. Mr. Anderson was instrumental in Joe attending the University of Colorado studying to become a Pharmacist.

Just prior to the outbreak of WWII, he was selected for Naval Cadet Flight Training in Pensacola FL, earning his wings in February 1942. Before he was sent for the 1st of 3 tours to the Aleutian Islands in AK as a PBY Patrol Pilot, he met Ellen Erixon at a “Tea Dance” at San Diego NAS. On February 25, 1943, Joe & Ellen were married & celebrated 72 years together.

After his discharge from the Navy, he was hired by Zimmerly Air Transport flying the B-247. Through the years he survived the mergers with Empire Airlines, West Coast Airlines, Air West & Hughes Airwest, retiring #1 on the Pilot Seniority List as a B-727 Captain.

Joe was preceded in death by his wife, Ellen, & his daughter-in-law Kathy (HAW Flight Attendant). He is survived by his 3 sons, Dale & wife Gerda of Glendale AZ; Dan (HAW & NWA Pilot) & wife Susan of Scottsdale AZ; David of Laguna Niguel CA; & their 8 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

He was a wonderful husband, father, and man and will be greatly missed.

Obituary.......................

Steven Andrew Ray was born November 18, 1958 to Edward and Helen Ray in North Kingstown, Rhode Island.  He passed away September 29, 2017 after a hard-fought battle with cancer.  Steve was a Navy brat who lived many places all over the world.  He graduated from Kennedy High School in Denver, CO in 1976.  In 1980, he graduated from the University of Colorado and was commissioned an officer in the United States Navy.  On August 23, 1980, Steve and Jody married in Arvada, Colorado.

 

As a child, Steve’s dream was to fly airplanes.  He realized that dream when he earned his Naval Aviators Wings of Gold on December 11, 1981 in Corpus Christi, Texas.  Steve’s favorite job during his Navy career was as a flight instructor to incoming Navy pilots.  At the end of his commitment to the Navy, he was hired as a pilot by Northwest Airlines on January 9, 1987.  Steve loved being an airline pilot, flying all over the world.

 

But as much as Steve loved flying, he loved his family more.  There was nothing more important to him.  He loved playing with his kids, going to soccer and lacrosse games, and traveling the world together as a family.  He was happiest when his family was gathered together at home.

 

Steve was preceded in death by his mother, Helen and his daughter, Alexandra.  He is survived by his wife Jody, daughter Mikaela (David), son James and grandson Cooper.

 

Funeral services will be held at 4:00 p.m. on Thursday, October 5, 2017 at the Ashley Park LDS Ward, 10312 Ashley Park Drive, Sandy, UT.  A visitation will be held from 2:30 – 3:30 p.m. prior to the services.  Interment Fort Logan National Cemetery, Denver, CO.

Word has reached our group with the passing of retired Delta pilot Captain Bob Mackey, age 68.  Captain Mackey joined Delta Air Lines 09-07-1979 and was based 030/DFW.  He is survived by his wife Barbara, their children and grandchildren.

Obituary.............................Robert "Bob" Mackey

Robert J. Mackey, 68, passed away peacefully at home following a courageous battle with cancer on Sunday, November 19th, 2017. Born in Pensacola, FL on November 25th, 1948 to William A. and Warren Jemison Mackey, he graduated from Arlington Heights High School in 1966 and the Naval Academy in 1970. After marrying Barbara Murdoch on June 6th, 1970, Bob embarked on a lifetime of service to others.

He served his country flying with the Navy for 9 years active duty, 18 years in the Naval Reserve and another 20 recruiting for the Naval Academy.

As a Delta Air Lines pilot Bob served countless travelers and retired as Chief Line Check Pilot on the 737 in 2004. From 1983 to 1987, Bob was elected to four terms with the Keller ISD school board, serving as Board President for several years.

Golf would wait as Bob began teaching Geometry and Calculus at Keller High School in 2006. He was selected as 2009 High School Teacher of the Year, and served as Math Department Chairman from 2010 until 2014.

In 2014, Bob’s fourth career began, serving others through his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, as a Church Building Chairman, Deacon and Elder with Lakeside Presbyterian Church PCA.

He is survived by his loving wife of 47 years, Barbara; and their two sons and families: Robert, Jr. (wife Kimberly), their children Jordan, Carter, and Peyton; Stephen (wife Mollie), and their son Parker; his brother William Mackey (wife Sue); and sister Sue Mackey Augustus (husband Jim).

It is with great sadness that I

inform you that our fellow alum Robert "Bob"

Mackey, a proud member of the Class of '70, passed away

on 19 November 2017.   

     

Bob was a member of the Class of

1970. He was a gymnast at USNA. Following graduation he

earned his wings and flew A-7s. After his time in the Navy

he flew for Delta for many years.   

Most of us in the Chapter knew Bob

from his service as the Blue and Gold Officer Area

Coordinator for Area 317 (Fort Worth). Bob was a BGO for 37

years. He recruited many of the BGOs serving still today,

and his leadership was instrumental in building the

incredibly strong candidate source that our Chapter area

represents to USNA.    

He was preceded in death by his

parents William and Sue Mackey. He is survived by his wife

of 47 years Barbara; sons Robert (Kimberly) Mackey and

Stephen (Mollie) Mackey; brother William Alexander Mackey;

sister Sue Mackey Augustus and grandchildren Christopher

Jordan, Carter Boyd, Peyton Gayle and William

Parker.
