Notification with the passing of retired Southern Airways/Northwest pilot Captain Donald ‘Bo’ Wayne Burton, age 72.  Captain Burton’s obituary indicates he joined Southern Airways in March 1973 and retired with Northwest Airlines.  He is survived by his wife Karol Kimball Burton, their children and grandchildren.

Obituary.................BURTON, Donald Wayne "Bo"

Donald Wayne "Bo" Burton passed away February 27, 2018 in Cumming, GA at the age of 72. Born in Atlanta, he was the son of the late Pomeroy Burton and the late Doris Hammond Burton. He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Karol Kimball Burton, their two children, Kathryn Burton McRaney and Scott Alexander "Alex" Burton, his daughter-in-law Amanda Burton, son-in-law Chris McRaney and his brother Stacy Burton, along with much loved nieces, nephews and cousins. He was very proud to be grandfather to his twin grandsons, Max and Palmer McRaney. Bo attended Briarcliff High School in DeKalb County and the University of Georgia. While at Georgia, Bo was a letterman (second baseman) on the Bulldogs Varsity Baseball Team and also a member of Sigma Pi fraternity. After college, his love of aviation lead him to take flying lessons at Peachtree DeKalb Airport and he eventually achieved his dream of becoming a commercial airline pilot. He started his aviation career with Southern Airways in Atlanta in March of 1973 and retired as a Captain of over 30 years for Northwest Airlines. Bo enjoyed many passions. He had a great love for playing tennis, was an avid reader, enjoyed cooking, always watched the Atlanta Braves and his beloved Georgia Bulldogs. Bo was also a devoted runner and was a participant in the very first Peachtree Road Race. He would run every day even when on his trips as an airline pilot. This was an important time for Bo as he was not only very health-conscious, but it also was his time to pray. The visitation will be held at 1:00pm and memorial service at 2:00pm Sunday, March 4th at Roswell Funeral Home 950 Mansell Rd., Roswell, GA 30076. A memorial celebration will be held following the service at the funeral home. In lieu flowers, donations can be made to the First Baptist Church of Roswell Music Ministry or Children's Healthcare of Atlanta.

Leo Richard "Dick" Dee, age 72, of Chaska, lost his 2 and one half year struggle with glioblastoma on Thursday, February 1, 2018.

 

Celebration of Life: Saturday, March 10, 11 a.m.; Visitation, 10 a.m., St. Victoria Family Parish, 8228 Victoria Drive, Victoria. Should friends desire, Dick requested memorials be made to Little Brothers Friends of the Elderly, Minneapolis Chapter. 1845 E. Lake St., Minneapolis, MN 55407.

 

Dick was born on May 21, 1945, in Hartford City, IN, the son of Leo Richard and Kathryn Hollis Dee. They preceded him in death.

 

Dick and his high school sweetheart, Karen Coughlin were blessed to have two wonderful daughters, Lori Dee Reeburgh and Kristen Dee Tierney. Dick grew up in Dunkirk, IN, class of 1963 and attended Purdue University until he was hired by Northwest Airlines as a pilot at age 21, retiring at age 60 in 2005. Dick was grateful to fly with Northwest for 38 years in a career he thoroughly enjoyed. He loved to be with family & friends, laugh, have fun, spend winters in Florida, stay active, travel, collect antiques and volunteer at Little Brothers Friends of the Elderly for over 40 years. He was a dedicated steward of their land, planting 100's of trees, attracting bluebirds to their property and enjoying the wildlife that roamed freely. The birds were well fed! He inspired many people in his life to further their education and follow their dreams, like he did! He was a kind, loving and generous man who will be missed by many. As an adoring grandfather (aka, Bach) we know these gifts will not be forgotten, but carried on.

 

Surviving Dick are his loving wife of 52 years, Karen; devoted daughters, Lori (Scott) Reeburgh, Kristen (Cronin) Tierney; grandchildren, Jack and Claire Reeburgh, Cameron, Aynslee and Wesley Tierney; younger brother, Arthur (Bonnie) Dee; mother-in-law, Marie Coughlin and many extended family and friends.

Notification with the passing of retired Delta pilot Captain Milton Parlier Murdock, age 87.  Captain Murdock joined Delta Air Lines 04-30-1956 and retired in 1990, based DFW.   Widowed in 2002, Captain Murdock is survived by his children and their families plus many other extended family members.

Obituary................

Milton Parlier Murdock, age 87, passed away peacefully at Canton Oaks Nursing Home in Canton, Texas surrounded by his children on Monday, February 19, 2018. He was born on November 14, 1930 in Statesville, North Carolina to Thomas Hoyt and Mattie Lou (Parlier) Murdock. Milton’s great passion was flying. At 17, he hopped a bus to Texas to join the Air Force, beginning his military career at Sheppard Air Force Base. He continued his service at Carswell Air Force Base in Fort Worth, Texas where he attained the rank of Sergeant. After leaving the military, Milton became a pilot for American Flyers and then flew for Delta Airlines for 30 years where he was captain of the L-1011 for many years. He had a wonderful sense of humor and loved to share stories about his travels. On November 26, 1955, he married Neville June Mercer, whom he met at Rolling Hills Baptist Church in Fort Worth, Texas, while in a quartet there. They settled in Irving, Texas where they were happily married for 47 years until her death in 2002. Milton’s special interests and hobbies also included raising a family, fishing with his children and grandchildren, gardening with June and music, particularly singing hymns at church. He and June raised their family in a loving Christian home and taught their children by example. He was a generous giver and often helped people in need. Milton was also an avid caretaker of his home and yard and loved to do projects around the house. Some of his other favorite times were traveling with his family, visiting with his neighbors, tending to the old homestead in Statesville, North Carolina while visiting family there, and spending time with his grandchildren. He is survived by his children, daughter, Jana (Murdock) Woodard and son-in-law, Randy Woodard, of Irving, Texas and son, Jason Murdock and daughter-in-law, DeAnn (Mahaffey) Murdock of Wills Point, Texas; 5 grandchildren, Matthew Woodard, Heather (Murdock) Bender and her husband Jason Bender, Tommy Murdock and Samuel Woodard; 1 great grandchild, Colten Bender; one sister, Louise (Murdock) McIntyre and one brother, Bill Murdock; sisters-in-law, Elaine (Mercer) Chapman, Gloria (Mercer) King and Lana (Mercer) Maxey and Jeanie Murdock; brothers-in-law, Victor McIntyre, Donald King and Cecil Maxey along with a host of nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife, June (Mercer) Murdock, a son, Joel Murdock, and a brother, Henry Murdock; sisters-in-law, Wanda Mercer and Nan Mercer; brothers-in-law, Jack Mercer, Boyd Mercer and Sam Chapman. A visitation will be held at Bluebonnet Hills Funeral Home, 5725 Colleyville Blvd, Colleyville, TX 76034, on Friday, March 2nd, from 6 -8pm. A family graveside service will be held there on Saturday, March 3rd, In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting donations be made to Compassion International. Milton will be remembered for his devotion to family, a kind and giving heart, his love of flying, sense of humor and deep faith.

Obituary....................

On Jan 28, 1937 Portland, Oregon experienced a snowstorm that shut down city buses. That was the day Brad chose to enter the world. He left it on Nov 11, 2017 another nasty weather day; a very windy, rainy day. Guess he liked entrances. His parents Corlis Newell and Virginia graham were both grandchildren of Oregon pioneers. His maternal great-grandmother came across the Oregon Trail in 1859. Brad grew up in Portland going to Washington High School, where both of his parents had gone.

 

After graduation he joined the Oregon Air National Guard (OREANG) and qualified for pilot training graduating from the same in 1958. That was the same year he met his future wife Judy Nicolarsen, whom he married in 1961. Both went to Portland State (then) College. Brad received his BS in Physics in 1963. By then he had acquired a love for sailing and had purchased his first of 7 sailboats. At 29 he opted for the airlines (Northwest) rather than a PHD, besides an airline salary could pay for his new love... bigger sailboats. Two children followed: Doug in ‘66 and Wendi in ‘69.

 

1976 was a big year. The family moved to Port Ludlow. Also in 1976 the OREANG went to Tyndall AFB in Florida for the international William tell Weapons Meet. He and his back-seater Don Tonole won in the F101 category. He had 22 years in the OREANG and retired.

 

He sailed the local waters for 20 years, including two circumnavigations of Vancouver Island, several trips with fellow members of Port Ludlow Yacht Club, which he joined in 1975. Commodore in 1981. Flying was working. All free time was boat time.

 

After 27 years of airline flying, he said “I have had it; Seattle to Asia is not fun, I want to go sailing” and he quit. Wendi had just graduated from WSU. She opted to go sailing with her parents. In June of 1993 the three of us set off for the South Pacific via yet another rounding of Vancouver Island and Mexico. Wendi departed the crew in New Zealand, where she met the love of her life. One crew member short we headed back to the islands and thence to Australia. Home via the The Solomon’ sand Tarawa. Brad, a WWII history buff, knew more of the local history than the tour guides. Lost the mast 880 miles SSW of Honolulu. Interesting 880 miles. Refueled via a Norwegian soy bean oil tanker mid-ocean; thanks to the help of USCG and the beauty of GPS. Honolulu is no place to break down. Home June 1997 almost to the day we left.

 

Continued sailing with the yacht club and Cruising Club of America. Brad also spent 15 plus years with the Coast guard Auxiliary doing boat inspections and patrols.

 

Brad is survived by his wife of 56 years Judy, son Doug Newell (Crystal) of Lake Tapps, daughter Wendi Dawson (Andrew) of Melbourne, Australia, grandchildren Jack Dawson (16) Charlotte Dawson (12) both of Melbourne and brother Graham Newell (Patsy) of port Ludlow. He was preceeded in death by his sister Gayle Newell and half-sister Sara Newell. Many thanks to the ladies of Jefferson Healthcare and Hospice for their help in keeping Brad comfortable at home. There will be a celebration of life in February.

It is my unpleasant duty to inform our members that NWA pilot Bradford ‘Brad’ Newell...... passed away on 11 November, 2017. He succumbed to Alzheimer’s in Port Ludlow, Washington. Brad was an USAF/ANG veteran, having flown fighters at the Portland ANG Base. He was hired on April 11, 1966. Brad and his wife Judy had been married 56 years. They met at the Portland State University where Brad earned a degree in physics. He was also a serious salt water sailor and yacht club member.

 

There is a tentative celebration of life service planned for February. I will pass along those details when they become available.

Word has reached us with the passing of RNPA member retired Northwest pilot Captain Paul Richard Pompermayer, age 86.  Captain Pompermayer joined Northwest Airlines 12-01-1958.  He is survived by his wife Rita, their children, plus many other family members and aviation colleagues.

Obituary............  Paul Richard Pompermayer

Paul flew west on February 6, 2018 surrounded by his loving family during his final hours. Paul died from complications of Alzheimer's Disease.

 

Born at 12:02 a.m. on January 1, 1932, in Salida, Colorado, Paul would go through life saying, "I ruined my mother's New Year's Eve." Paul spent his childhood in La Junta, CO. Raised by his mother, as Paul's father was disabled and lived in a Veteran's home, Paul began working at a very young age to help support the family. By age 12, he had a paper route and was buying all of his own clothing. Upon graduating from La Junta High School in 1950, Paul worked the 3-11 pm shift in a steel mill while attending Pueblo Junior College. Paul would later say, "Working in the steel mill was the best education I ever received." It was difficult, dangerous work and taught Paul that an education would be his key to success. While in college, Paul qualified for the ROTC and joined the Navy. From there, he soared through basic training, became a legal officer as well as a Navy pilot. He was proud to serve and grateful for the outstanding training he received as a Navy pilot.

 

After serving in the Navy, Paul finished college at Seattle University on the GI Bill. He would continue to serve in the Ready Reserve for 8 years. While attending Seattle University, he met the love of his life, a beautiful stewardess named Rita Gleason. The young couple married in 1957. They settled on Mercer Island in 1968 where they raised four children.

 

Paul would spend the majority of his professional career with Northwest Airlines. He became a Captain and check pilot on the State-of-the-Art 747, and made many lifelong friends at Northwest.

 

Paul enjoyed the outdoors, fishing, birdwatching, tennis, and travel with Paris being his favorite city. Poetry was always foremost in his mind. In later years, Paul could still recite Cyrano by heart. Paul loved spending time with his "Reedee," his wife of 62 years, his children, grandchildren and many nieces and nephews who knew him as "Uncle Paulie." He loved them all very much.

 

For the last two and a half years, Paul was lovingly cared for by the outstanding staff of Sunrise Assisted Living on Mercer Island. Making the best of every situation, Paul used to say, "Bloom where you're planted." He participated in trivia, crossword puzzles, bingo, and Scrabble right up to the end.

 

Paul is predeceased by his parents, Nick and Jenny, brothers Nick Jr. and Peter, and infant sister Dorothy. He is survived by wife Rita, sons Mark (Melissa) of Beaverton; Steve of San Francisco; Marty (Carolyn) of Seattle, and daughter, Lisa (Peter) Casterella of Mercer Island. He also leaves behind 6 grandchildren (Dana, Drake, Katharine, Andrew, Kelly, and Erik), numerous close friends and family members. He will be missed by his Welsh Corgi, Oscar Mayer, family dogs Reggie and Hazel, and Moose the celebrity canine at Sunrise.

 

Donations may be made in memory of Paul Pompermayer to: The Alzheimer's Association (Alz.org) or The Seattle Humane Society (Seattlehumane.org).

 

A Funeral Mass will be held at St. Monica Catholic Church

4301 88th Ave SE on Mercer Island on Friday, March 2 at 11:00 am.
