CARES AND CONCERNSInformation has come to us of the death this morning of Mrs. Wanda June Coker Byrd, 81, wife of retired Delta Captain Lester M. Byrd, who was hired by Delta January 3, 1967 and retired in 1997.  June was born July 29, 1937 in Mississippi and married Les on December 30, 1960.  She had been very ill for the past few months with pneumonia and other illnesses and had been home under hospice care only a few days until her death this morning, June 3, 2019.  Funeral plans are being discussed and she will be buried in her home town of Pontotoc, MS.

Wanda passed away on Monday, June 3, 2019. Wanda was a resident of Arlington, Texas at the time of passing. She graduated from Pontotoc High School and attended Itawamba College. June and Les travelled widely while Les served as a pilot in the US Navy, including long stays in Japan and California. Burial will be in the Pontotoc City Cemetery on Saturday, June 8, 2019 at 10 am. Donations in memory of June can be sent to Habitat for Humanity, 13 W. June Byrd, neé Coker, of Arlington, TX, 81, passed away June 3, 2019 peacefully at home. She graduated from Pontotoc High School and attended Itawamba College.  She married Lester Byrd on December 30, 1960.  June and Les travelled widely while Les served as a pilot in the US Navy, including long stays in Japan and California.  They settled in Arlington Texas to raise their two sons, Jeff and Scott, when Les became a pilot for Delta Airlines in 1967.  In Les’ retirement years, they spent more time in Pontotoc with family and friends. June was an avid bridge player, reaching the Life Master level, and was a formidable cook and seamstress.  Burial will be in the Pontotoc City Cemetery on Saturday, June 8, 2019 at 10 am. Bro. Marcus Coward will officiate.  Survivors: husband-Lester Morgan Byrd, son- Jeff (Ellie) Byrd, 3 grandchildren- Rachel Byrd of New York, NY, Natalie Byrd and Aaron Byrd of Burlingame, CA. NWA Captain Leonard Donner Lipman

News has reached our group with the passing of retired Northwest pilot Captain Leonard Donner Lipman, age 81.  Captain Lipman joined Northwest Airlines 04-08-1968.  He is survived by his wife Myrna, plus his children and grandchildren.

Obituary............Leonard Donner Lipman, born in Bayonne, New Jersey, passed away unexpectedly at home in Seattle on May 22, 2019 at the age of 81.  Leonard was a very caring, intelligent and generous man with a great sense of humor.

 

He graduated from Michigan State University in 1962 with a BS in Psychology and enlisted in Officer Candidate School in the United States Navy at Pensacola, Florida to become a pilot.  He was very proud of his 5-year service as a naval aviator.  This experience helped usher him into a 30-year career as a pilot with the Northwest Airlines.  He retired as a 747 captain.

 

Some of Leonard’s most memorable experiences were boating trips to his favorite spot, the Gulf Islands, Canada captaining the Sealestial.  In retirement, he looked forward to starting each day by meeting his friends to chit chat at Starbucks.  He loved to travel and watch basketball. He was a devoted “Poppy” to his grandson Luc and regularly accompanied him to his karate classes and other activities.  Leonard was very happy when he became a grandfather for the second time after his granddaughter, Amira was born.

 

He is survived my his wife Myrna, brother David (Michele), daughter Tatum Sauer, son Sam (Debbie Chen), grandchildren Luc and Amira, nieces, grandnephews and other relatives and friends.  He is predeceased by his parents Joseph and Muriel.

 

A memorial service will be held at Tahoma National Cemetery at 18600 SE 240th Street, Kent, WA 98042 at 10:45 a.m. on June 20, 2019.

Notification with the passing of retired Western/Delta pilot Captain Dennis Paul Zenger, age 74.  Captain Zenger joined Western Airlines 02-19-1979 and retired with Delta Air Lines in 2004.  He is survived by his wife Peggy Dormer Zenger plus many other family members, friends and aviation colleagues.  Obituary information and photos may be viewed online at

Dennis Paul Zenger of Carlsbad, retired airline captain and proud Naval aviator

Dennis Zenger passed away in Carlsbad, California, at the age of 74 on Saturday, May 18th, surrounded with the love of his family. Despite living under a cancer diagnosis for the past decade, Dennis's strength and optimism were an inspiration to all his Sigma Chi fraternity brothers, his fellow aviators from VF151 and beyond, his countless golf buddies, and the friends and family saddened by his loss. Dennis was born to Elmer and Frances Zenger in Portland, Oregon. He fondly remembered childhood fishing trips along the Oregon coast with his father and elder brother, Dean, a tradition he continued with his own children decades later. Upon graduating from Madison High School in 1962, Dennis entered the University of Oregon and earned a degree in Economics in 1966. While serving as an F4 pilot on the USS Midway, Dennis's second deployment in 1972 included dangerous missions over North Vietnam, which he chronicled in a contribution to the book "Vietnam to Western Airlines, Volume 2." As he wrote, "I was just as scared as everyone else but determined to do my duty. One of my biggest motivations was to do anything I could to help our fellow airmen in those Hanoi prisons get released." Following his military service, Dennis joined Western Airlines in 1979. Later, as a captain for Delta Airlines, he covered the country until his retirement in 2004. In his free time, he explored the world by tracing his family roots back to Switzerland, plus trips including Italy, England, France, Ireland, Germany and Australia...and even two rounds of golf at St. Andrews in Scotland. Following a 2017 cruise to New Zealand, he and his wife Peggy joined friends for a summer cruise to Alaska just last year, living his life to the fullest. Dennis is survived by his wife Peggy Dormer Zenger, his brother Dean Zenger and wife Kaye, his daughter Stephanie Knudsen and husband Brad, his stepson Jeff Dormer and wife Sarah Coulter, grandchildren Noah, James, Hailey and Stella, and numerous members of his extended family in San Diego, Portland and beyond. A ceremony will mark Dennis's interment at Miramar National Cemetery on Tuesday, May 28th at 9am, to be followed that day by a Celebration of Life and reception hosted aboard the USS Midway Museum in San Diego at 11am. Notification with the passing of retired Southern/Northwest pilot Capt. Larry Willard Fussell, age 71.  Captain Fussell began his commercial flying career with Southern Airways and due mergers would have retired with Northwest Airlines.   He is survived by his wife Françoise, his  sons and his grandchildren.

Obituary for Mr. Larry Willard Fussell

Larry "Willard" Fussell died on Friday, May 10th, 2019 at his home in Walhalla, SC and will be dearly missed.

The Life Celebration for Larry will be held on Thursday, May 16th, 2019 at 3pm at Crystal Lake in Mountain Rest, SC. The address for the event is 421 Paradise Cove Drive, Mountain Rest, SC 29664. Larry would not want anyone dressed up, so please come wearing casual attire or dress comfortably for the (outdoor) event at the lake.

 

Larry was born in Americus, GA to George Fussell and Maude Ölkers on December 2nd, 1947. He was a good student and enjoyed playing basketball for his school. He moved with his mother to Walhalla, a city founded by his German ancestors, for high school where he was a star player on the high school basketball team.

 

He knew from a young age that his calling wasn't to be a farmer as many others in his small town planned to be, but rather he wanted to be a pilot. He decided to go to the University of South Carolina for their Air Force ROTC program. In 1970, he graduated with a B.S. in Psychology from the University of South Carolina where he met his wife, Francoise Mary Hipp of Beaufort, SC. After much cajoling, he convinced Francoise to marry him, a decision that would keep them together and happy for the next 49 years. Lacking time and money for a honeymoon, they moved to Louisiana for Francoise to complete work on a Masters Degree at LSU and soon afterward, Larry traveled to Columbus, MS to attend Air Force flight school.

 

Larry flew KC-135 refueling planes for the Air Force. He was deployed several times as part of Operation Young Tiger in Thailand during the Vietnam War.

 

After the births of his first two sons, he found a position at a small airline which, through a series of mergers, is now called Delta Airlines. He flew millions of passengers safely around North America for almost 30 years.

 

While not flying above the clouds, he enjoyed spending time with his family, vacationing at Edisto Island, drinking coffee, watching Andy Griffith, and supporting his wife and sons in any way he was able. Buying gifts for Larry was nearly impossible. He wasn't big on possessions and was happiest when he was the one doing the giving, whether it was a favor, a steak, or a surprisingly stiff cocktail.

 

Larry is survived by his wife, Françoise, his four sons, Christopher, wife Robin, Michael, wife Melissa, Patrick, wife Joselyn, Thomas, partner Mandolin, and his nine grandchildren, Emily, Daniel, Ethan, Alexa, Lily, Presley, William, Astrid, and (one-month-old) Bear. He is also survived by dogs and grand-dogs Zuzu, Beau, Groot, Rosie, Walter, Darwin and Willie Nelson.

 

He cared deeply for children and dogs alike so the family requests that any memorial charity donations be sent to St. Jude's Hospital or the ASPCA.

Douglas Sherwood Tremblay, 78, of Las Vegas, Nevada passed away on May 11, 2019. Douglas was born and raised in Lewiston, Maine to his parents, Joyce and Roland Tremblay. He graduated from University of New Hampshire and enlisted in the United States Air Force. He was a Pilot from 1962 – 1967 and flew KC135 Refueler over Vietnam. In 1967 he joined Northwest Airlines (MSP) and then retired from Delta Airlines in 2000. Upon retirement Douglas and his wife, Patricia moved to Las Vegas, Nevada. In his free time Douglas enjoyed being an ABC bowler, golfer, hiker and poker player. Douglas was preceded in death by his parents, Joyce and Roland (Maine) and his first wife, Wendy (MN). Douglas is survived by his 3 children, Mike (Tina) of Ohio, Sean (Liz) of Minnesota and Pam of Minnesota; his wife of 26 years, Patricia Haggenmiller-Lavell and her 2 children, Tiffani of Minnesota and Sean (Barbara) of Minnesota and their 9 grandchildren. Douglas will be laid to rest in Mendota Heights, Minnesota.
