She was born Linda Jean Steele on August 23, 1946 in Cullman, AL to James Emory Steele and Ruth Marie Turney Steele. She was married for 39 years to Stephen Mills who was at her side when she passed away. Linda was predeceased by her first husband, William Polk, who died of cancer in 1977. She is survived by her husband Stephen, brother James Michael Steele (Patricia), brother in law David Mills (Flor de Luna), sister in law Claudia Mills Metcalf (Ronald), stepdaughter Marcia Mills Smith (Kevin), stepson Gregory, granddaughters Katelyn and Nicole Smith, Marlayna Mills Edwards (Jonathan), Kalie Mills and partner Daniel Medina, nephews James Tyrone (Joy), Shawn (Linda) and Michael (Anna) Steele, nieces Ruth Mills Curtiss (John), Tiffany Mills Wimsatt (Christopher), Timothy Mills, Dylan, Jeremy, Jessica and Melissa Metcalf  and several grand nephews and grand nieces. The family relocated to Homestead FL in 1949 where she was raised and lived until moving to New Hampshire in 1996 and then back to Florida in Palm Coast in 2002. Her mother often said she was a perfect child. She attended Redland Elementary School and South Dade High School graduating with honors in 1964. Her professional life took off when she was hired by National Airlines as a Flight Attendant in 1967. She excelled at her profession. She was highly regarded by her fellow crewmembers for the high standard she set. Her life and that of many others was altered by a tragic accident. On November 23, 1973 Linda was a Flight Attendant on a DC-10 that experienced an uncontained engine failure resulting in an explosive decompression of the aircraft and the loss of a passenger’s life. Her courageous actions during the emergency saved the life of a fellow Flight Attendant on the crew. Because of her heroic deed, she was awarded the Association of Flight Attendants Medal of Heroism by the Administrator of the FAA. She was the only living recipient of the award at the time. The Flight Safety Foundation Heroism Award was also bestowed upon her citing her bravery and attention to duty. Linda met her future husband Steve, a National Airlines Flight Engineer, while flying and they married in 1980, the same year that National merged with Pan American World Airways. She flew for Pan Am until 1986 when she retired. Her next accomplishment was an Associate of Arts degree from Daytona Beach Community College where she never failed to make the Dean’s list. She remained very active in the National Airlines Flight Crew retiree group, the National Airlines Buccaneers. Her hobbies included gardening, especially her orchids, writing an occasional short story and she thoroughly enjoyed gifting to friends, relatives, charities, and most of all children. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in memory of Linda to the American Lung Association. Due to the COVID 19 restrictions, a Celebration of Life will be held at a date yet to be determined. Many are blessed to have had a best friend who could be depended upon without question. Linda passed away having three: Phyllis Douthit of Valdosta, GA Sue Ward of Palm Coast, FL and her loving husband Steve Mills of Palm Coast, FL. We all three will miss her dreadfully for the rest of our days.

Steve joined National Airlines 05-16-1977, made the merger with Pan Am, and retired with Delta Air Lines based Second Officer 030/ATL.  Steve was widowed in April 2020 with the passing of his wife Linda.

On Sunday afternoon, February 20, 2022, we suffered the loss of a true gentleman, a fine airman, and a strong supporter of our Buccaneer group. F/E Steve Mills, age 74, was at his home in Palm Coast, Florida when he passed away after a lengthy illness. His contributions as a friend and compatriot will be sorely missed but never forgotten. More details will be forthcoming as we learn of them.

Stephen Alfred Mills, 74, of Palm Coast, Florida passed away peacefully at home February 20, 2022, after a courageous battle with cancer. His son and daughter were both by his side.  He was born September 12, 1947, in Manchester, New Hampshire, the second child of James Mills and Marie Daley Mills. He had one brother and two sisters. He was predeceased by the love of his life, his wife, Linda Steele Mills, his parents, and one sister, Jeanne Mills Heulskamp.

He is survived by his son, Gregory Mills, of Lady Lake, Florida, his devoted daughter, Marcia Mills Smith, of Gainesville, Georgia, his son-in-law, Kevin Smith, brother David Mills, of Goffstown, New Hampshire, sister Claudia Mills Metcalf, of Robbinsville, North Carolina, granddaughters Alayna Edwards, Kalie Mills, Katelyn Smith, and Nicole Smith, one great-granddaughter Everly Edwards, and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was a 1966 graduate of West High School in Manchester, New Hampshire. After high school Steve joined the Air Force where he served as an aircraft mechanic and a C-141 flight engineer. He was a proud Vietnam War veteran and a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and American Legion. After his military active-duty Steve remained in the Air Force Reserve for many years flying C-141s.

In 1977 he was hired as a flight engineer by National Airlines which in 1980 was merged into Pan Am. As part of a 1991 Pan Am route sale to Delta Air Lines he transferred to Delta where he remained until he retired in 2006. During his airline career Steve flew Boeing 727s and 747s, Airbus A-300s and Lockheed L-1011s. He dutifully served for many years as a flight engineer and pilot union representative at Pan Am and Delta.

Additionally, he was a key member of the National Airlines Buccaneers organization where he served his fellow retirees for many years. Steve was generous to a fault and always available to help family and friends in need, both physically and financially.

Knowing Steve was a privilege, and he will be forever missed by all those who knew and loved him.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in memory of Steve to the American Lung Association.

Interment for Steve, with military honors, and wife Linda will be at Jacksonville National Cemetery in Jacksonville, Florida on a date to be determined.

Born November 20, 1943, Walter Hall Mills III was educated at Blake School in Hopkins, MN, and the University of Minnesota. As a young man he loved to fly participating in crop dusting in Montana. After many hours at Flying Cloud Airport in Shakopee, MN, and in the air, he was hired April 11, 1966, by Northwest Airlines. From Second Officer and First Officer on the Boeing 707 and the 620, Walt made Captain on the 727 on April 21, 1970. Walt flew the mountains on the 727, to Europe on DC-10 and flew the 747, both passenger and cargo, to Asia. Walt also worked in the Training Department of NATCO as a 747 Training Captain and Check Airman. He retire early on April 30, 2001, after 35 years of service with Northwest Airlines. Walt loved flying any airplane, and the airplane was part of him in the air.

Obituary…………………MILLS, John M. 5/24/1945- 6/25/2020

Colonel John M. Mills, 75, of Alpharetta, GA, died on Thursday June 25, 2020 after a long battle with cancer. He was born on May 24, 1945 to the late Jesse and Marion Mills. He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Marion "Mare" Parke Mills, his children John Duhring Mills (Jenifer) and Jean Parke Wahl (Rob), and his grandchildren JohnHenry Parke Mills, Emily Jean Mills, Ashlyn Kallbreier Wahl, Borden Parke Wahl and Colin Mills Wahl, as well as a host of extended family members and friends who loved him. He was preceded in death by his loving son, Bryan Taylor Mills.

John graduated from the Georgia Military Academy and Georgia Tech in 1963 and 1967 respectively. He went on to serve his country as a proud member of the Marine Corps. Having served active duty as a fixed wing aviator from 1967 to 1972, he ultimately retired from the Marine Corps Reserves as a Colonel in 1990. John enjoyed a thirty plus year career as a distinguished Delta Pilot including serving as Manager of Domestic Flight Operations and as B-777 Chief Line Check Pilot. After retiring from his role as a pilot in 2005, he went on to serve as part of the Delta pilot acquisition team. He is fondly remembered by his colleagues for his intelligence and humor. He was a great mentor and a true gentleman.

John was resident of Atlanta and Alpharetta for most of his life. An active member of the Atlanta Athletic Club since 1981, he was an avid golfer and loving friend. John was also an active member of St. Martin in the Fields Episcopal Church. For John, family always came first. He enjoyed nothing more than a chaotic house full of his children and grandchildren. He was a devoted husband beyond compare. Between family, career, golf and friends, John squeezed every drop out of his seventy-five years on earth.

John will be interred at St. Martin in the Fields Episcopal Church at a later date.

July 4, 1970 – April 28, 2020

On Tuesday Bryan passed away unexpectedly leaving his parents, John M. and Marion Parke “Mare” Mills and siblings, Jean Parke Wahl (Rob) and John Duhring Mills (Jen). He was a loving Uncle to Ashlyn Kallbreier, Borden Parke and Colin Mills Wahl, JohnHenry Parke and Emily Jean Mills.
Bryan was a graduate of Milton High School 1988 where he was Most Valuable soccer player. Bryan played for Spacewall (Liver Pool Reds), coached by David Chadwick. The team won many tournaments. Bryan attended Clemson University on a soccer scholarship and was the starting goalkeeper his freshman year. He then attended Clayton College on a scholarship where he was an All American. Post college, Bryan found his passion for coaching and led many teams to State Champions. The last six years Bryan was a manager of the Seafood Department at Publix.

Obituary : Arnold Pleasant

Olympia, Washington - With a heart full of love, a life full of precious memories and a body ready for mercy after a strongly fought battle with Corticobasal Degeneration, Arnold "Arnie" Pleasant passed away on 12/1/21, at the age of 83, leaving a legacy of kindness, selflessness, humble sincerity, and true love for his family and friends. He was loved by so many and wore many titles; Son, Husband, Father, Partner, Brother, Uncle, Grandpa, Cousin, Captain, Mentor, Volunteer Fireman, Athlete, but his most valuable title was that of Friend. He was truly a man who was a friend to all.

Arnie was born in Cowiche, WA, in June of 1938. There he gained a deep-seated love of family, friends, and sports. He was a natural athlete and excelled in basketball, baseball, and football. He attended Washington State University on a sports scholarship playing both basketball and baseball for his beloved Cougar team. Arnie still holds the WSU Cougar baseball record for single season hitting leader, RBI in the Wood Bat Era (1892-1973).

It was at Washington State University that he met his first love, MaryAnn Tranum. Together they had 3 children, Chris Pleasant, Linda (Pleasant) Peffer, and Mike Pleasant. They were married in December of 1961 and moved to Ft. Rucker, Alabama where Arnie was a flight instructor and 1st Lieutenant in the Army. After serving, they moved back to MaryAnn's hometown of Olympia, and he started flying commercially for Northwest Airlines. He enjoyed his 33-year career with the airlines; traveling all over the world experiencing many different cultures and enjoying all the different kinds of food.

Arnie had many passions that he enjoyed: hunting and fishing, traveling, watching WSU football, golfing, hosting family and friends, tinkering around his beautiful home and property, and of course watching his grandkids play any sport. He was so proud of his 6 grandchildren: Madison (22), Skylar (18) (Christopher and Tonya Pleasant), Nick (18), Katie (17) (Linda and Cory Peffer), Ossie (29) and Adelaide (15) (Michael and Deidre Pleasant).

It was shortly after his retirement in 1998 that Arnie lost MaryAnn, his spouse of 39 years, to breast cancer in September of 2000. He was devastated, but soon after he met the angel sent to him, Nancy Webster, from North Carolina. Arnie and Nancy enjoyed many years traveling and spending time with family and friends.

In September of 2013, Arnie was diagnosed with Corticobasal Degeneration – a very rare debilitating degenerative brain disease. He was part of a study through the University of California San Francisco Weill Institute for Neurosciences Aging and Memory Center in hopes to further research and treatments. Nancy became his loving and committed caretaker in his final years, working tirelessly to ensure that he was comfortable throughout his progression in the disease.

Larry Taylor Obituary

Larry Joe Taylor, 87, passed away peacefully at his home in Morgan County, GA on February 17, 2026.

Larry was born March 27, 1938 in Asheboro NC. He was brought home to the family farm in Denton NC where he spent his childhood raising chickens and cows and learning about tractors, steam engines, and helping run the family saw mill. Larry graduated as salutatorian of Denton High School's Class of '56 and went on to earn a BS in Mechanical Engineering from N.C. State in 1960.

After graduation, he was commissioned as a 2nd LT in the Air Force via the ROTC program and upon earning his wings, selected C-130's as his primary platform. After 4 years of active duty he transitioned to F-102's in the Louisiana Air National Guard based in New Orleans while beginning his career with Delta Airlines. He retired from Delta after 32 years as an international L10-11 Captain amassing over 27, 000 flight hours.

Following his retirement from Delta, Larry's love of aviation led him and Joan to fly their WWII trainer (Stearman biplane) round trip from their farm and grass airstrip to San Diego, Maine, and various other aviation attractions. He was especially fond of giving airplane rides from the grass strip which had quickly replaced a cotton field on the farm. Friends, relatives - almost any willing passenger was welcome for a brief ride - or even an occasional loop or roll for those who dared, he was more than willing to oblige.

Once the children left home, Larry grew tired of fixing fences and chasing cows, and his interest in antique airplanes continued to grow. Children and relatives spread across the nation presented excuses for trips to North Carolina, Florida, Louisiana, California, Maine, Colorado, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Oklahoma. Any place with a grass runway was especially appealing to him. He never grew tired of the attraction that the sound of that round engine seemed to have for WWII vets who were almost guaranteed to appear at those smaller airports with stories of the last time they saw an open cockpit plane on their runway.

Larry maintained close ties to his roots as well as he ran a steam powered sawmill for 30 years at the Southeast Old Thresher’s Reunion in Denton NC. He loved living in the jet age while still volunteering to demonstrate steam power as a way to educate all who were interested in the ways of the past.

While Larry was flying for Delta from New Orleans, a blind date at a rodeo in May of 1968 introduced him to Joan Schaller. They married that December 28th and bought the farm in Georgia three months later. It was on that farm where he would gently pass away surrounded by family after 58 years of marriage. Larry is preceded in death by his parents Jesse Caswell Taylor and Ethel Elliott Taylor, his brother Caswell Leonidis Taylor, and his grandson Jackson Wellington Hatfield. He is survived by his wife Joan Schaller Taylor, daughter Amanda (Mike) Hatfield and their children Katherine Jane Hatfield and Jeb Thomas Hatfield, his son Matthew (Candace) Taylor and their children Jocelyn McKenzie Taylor and Maxwell James Taylor, and his son Benjamin (Anna Greta) Taylor and their children Benjamin Caswell Taylor, Mary Ella Anne Taylor, and Abigail Grace Taylor, his sister Angeline Taylor (William) Mills and their children Taylor Mills and Lou Ellen Mills.

A graveyard service and reception will be held on February 23rd at 4 PM at Lineberry United Methodist Church in Denton NC. A celebration of life will be held on March 14th at Bostwick United Methodist Church in Bostwick GA with a reception to follow at Taylor Farm.

Kenneth Layne (Ken) Johnson passed away quietly at his Palm Desert home on March 25, 2012 at the age of 79. Kenny, as he was affectionately called by his wife of 31 years, Sheryl Mills Johnson, was born on April 16, 1932 in Ogden, Utah to Vernal & Thelma Johnson. Ken is survived by his wife, Sheryl, six children, Nancy Whitlock, Utah, David K Johnson, Utah, Sandra Staub, North Carolina, Laura Cappelletti, Camarillo, Calif., Scott Mills, San Francisco and Kristin Mills, Maui, Hawaii. Also surviving are several grandchildren, great-grandchildren and one great-great grandchild. In addition, Ken leaves four sisters and two brothers. Son, Dennis Johnson, and two brothers predeceased him. After residing in Rancho Mirage, Calif., for 29 years, Sheryl and Ken recently moved to Palm Desert where Ken continued to be "The Captain of his own Ship!" Retiring as a Captain from Western Airlines in 1986 where he spent the previous 25 years, and prior to that with Hawaiian Airlines, Ken always prided himself with his love of the airways. With a twinkle in his China Blue eyes he would talk about his love of the US Navy, of which he entered in 1950 and where he attained AD3 (Aviation Machinist's Mate Third Class) and the devout love of airplanes! Ken was honorably discharged from the US Navy, 1954, in San Ysidro, Calif. where he continued his Flight Instruction. Captain Ken's quick wit and total sense of humor will be missed on Thursday mornings by his wingmen at the Old Bold Pilots Club, as well as his innumerable friends at the Palm Springs

Word has been received of the passing of WA/DL pilot Captain Ken Johnson.  Born at Ogden, Utah on April 16, 1932 Kenneth Layne Johnson was 79 years of age at the time of his passing March 25, 2012.  Ken hired on with Western 02-24-1961 and was based LAX.  Ken had been battling cancer for some time now and had recently been under the care of hospice.  He is survived by his wife Sheryl.  Personal condolences may be sent to Ken’s family at the home address

Along with his love of flying and dancing, Kenny was an avid golfer, fisherman, tennis player - all of these led him to the outdoors of which he totally enjoyed. John Taylor will be honored in a graveside service at the South Florida National (VA) Cemetery, 6501 N. State Road 7 (Rte: 441) Lake Worth, FL 33467 on Friday 7/17/2015 at 10:15A.  When you turn into the Cemetery go to the Administration Guard House.   They will direct you to the appropriate of 7 lanes to place your car.  They will provide a leader for a caravan to the gravesite.

The best way to drive to the Cemetery is to take I-95 to the Fort Pierce exit and then transition to the Florida Turnpike.  Exit the Turnpike at Lake Worth Road and proceed west to N St. Road 7.  Turn left on State Road 7 (Rte 441) and proceed south.  The Cemetery will be on your right south of Lantana Road.

John F. Taylor passed away peacefully on Sunday July 12^th surrounded by family.  He is survived by his beloved wife Kathy, brother Jim (Shirley), two sons Bryan and John (Vicki), and grandchildren Grady and Ryan. John was born in 1940 to Clara and John Taylor of Knoxville, TN.  He served in the Air Force were he found his love for aviation. He later earned his A&P license at George T. Baker which led to his first aviation job at National airlines performing aircraft maintenance.  John went on to become a professional flight engineer at National, Pan Am and Delta Airlines with a career spanning more than 33 years.  His passion for aviation would last a lifetime were he continued to fly with a private pilot’s license and build two of his own experimental aircraft.  John and Kathy retired in the Spruce Creek aviation community located in Port Orange where he enjoyed spending time with their many friends that shared the same passion for aviation. John lived a full and rich life filled with travel, food and family.  In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting a donation be made to Halifax Health Hospice, Port Orange Care Center or the Wounded Warrior Project.  Funeral services will be held at the South Florida VA National Cemetery located at 6501 S. State Road 7, Lake Worth, FL 33467 on July 17th, 2015 at 10:45am.

James ‘Jim’ L. Richards, 76, surrounded by family in his last hours, passed away peacefully in The Villages, FL on November 22, 2014 after a long and courageous battle with Parkinson’s disease. The son of Silas Richards and Nell Hartness, he was born January 2, 1938 in Starkville, MS, graduated from Mississippi State University, and went on to serve his country in the US Air Force from 1965 – 1967, flying C130 planes for the 464th Troop Wing, Pope AFB, NC. He retired after a career as a commercial airline pilot. Jim leaves behind his beloved wife of 53 years, Nancy, his children, Keith, Danny, and Barbara, eight grandchildren; Kristina, Kimberly, Lauren, Kyle, Brandon, Tyler, Alex, and Austin, and two great-grandchildren; Madison and Kyndall. He was preceded in death by his brother, Bill Richards, and will be missed by several nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held at North Lake Presbyterian Church on Tuesday, November 25, 2014 at 11:00 a.m., followed by a reception. Pastor Dave Stull will preside. Inurnment will take place at Florida National Cemetery in Bushnell on December 29, 2014. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Operation Shoebox, 8369 East Highway 25, Belleview, FL 34420.
