___ PCN FLIGHT WEST is sponsored by the Pilot Communication Network and is a service of the PCN provided for the Delta Pilot Retired family of pilot groups. Flight West was started and is maintained to accomplish two main goals. After we become aware of a colleague who has Flown West, 1. We aim to produce a “timely” notice sent to our community that allows for support and interaction from our group toward the grieving family of our friend and colleague. 2. Then, we aim to “archive” that notice on our Flown West Blogspot as a lasting accessible place of Dignity and Honor of our colleague for family legacy and posterity. Contributor contact info is generally removed before posting (unless requested otherwise).

WAL Captain Norman Arthur Edson
August 7, 1913 ~ June 19, 1991

Norman A. Edson, longtime pilot for Western Airlines who made headlines in 1960 when he safely landed a crippled DC-6 at Stapleton Airport, died June 19 in Presbyterian Aurora Hospital. He was 77. A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. today, June 22, in Fairmount Mortuary. The body was cremated. Mr. Edson began his career as a Western Airlines pilot in 1942, flying northern routes from Canada to Alaska during World War II. He retired in 1973. On Aug. 29, 1960, Mr. Edson was pilot of Western Flight 50 from Denver to Great Falls, Mont. Upon taking off after a stop in Casper, Wyo., the wheel of the left main landing gear fell off the 4-engine DC-6 and Mr. Edson was forced to return to Denver to attempt a landing where more safety facilities were available. After dumping more than 1,300 gallons of fuel northeast of Denver, Mr. Edson brought the plane and its 23 passengers down safely, using the entire length of the 6,745-foot runway. The landing was so perfect that none of the remaining tires blew out. Born Aug. 7, 1913, in Omaha, Mr. Edson took aviation courses from the University of Omaha. He was a member of Western Silver Chiefs, El Jebel Shrine in Denver and Masonic Lodge 807, Cinema Grotto and Xerxes Grotto in California. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Virginia; three sons, Robert of Parker, Norman of Littleton and Lee of Newberry Park, Calif.; three daughters, Lois Clark of Omaha, Debra Hall of Denver and Gwenn Breeden of Fort Wayne, Ind.; and 10 grandchildren.
