DL Capt. Thomas J. Hanner

Navy veteran, DL Capt. Thomas J. ‘Tom’ Hanner
March 27, 1936 ~ October 1, 2013



Word has been received with the passing of retired Delta pilot and Delta Golden Wings member Captain Thomas Joseph ‘Tom’ Hanner, age 77.  Captain Hanner joined Delta Air Lines 04-11-1966 and retired at the mandatory age 60 in 1996, based 030/ATL.

Thomas Joseph (Tom) Hanner, 77, of Dunwoody, GA, died peacefully in his home on October 1, 2013. He was born March 27, 1936 in Dover, Ohio, the youngest son of Walter and Margaret Kemp Hanner. He graduated from Dover High School, received a Bachelor’s degree from Miami University of Ohio where he was a brother in the Phi Delta Theta fraternity, then went on to earn his wings as a Naval Aviator.  After leaving the Navy, Tom and his wife, Carol, settled in Atlanta, GA where Tom flew as a pilot for 30 years with Delta Airlines, retiring in 1996.  In addition to his duties as a Captain for Delta, Tom held many positions for ALPA, the airline pilot’s union, including National President.  Tom was also the Editor of the Roar from 44, the Delta pilot newspaper.  During his life, he volunteered with Young Life and enjoyed sailing, golfing and traveling the world with his wife. At the time of his death, he was a member of Atlanta Unity Church in Peachtree Corners.  Tom enjoyed spending time with family and friends always ready with an entertaining story or interesting tale of travel. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather and will be missed by everyone whose life he touched. 

He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Carol “Mike” McManus Hanner; and his four daughters, Natalee Erquitt  (Alan) of Troutman, NC; Leslie Fender (Russ) of Orangeburg, SC; Ashley Alderman (Jim) of Roswell, GA; and Deanna Fuller (Keith) of Newnan, GA. His grandchildren include Brett Erquitt (Elizabeth), Michael Erquitt, Bo Fender, Margaret Fender, Tommy Fender, Tripp Alderman, Adrienne Alderman, and Rylan Fuller as well as his great granddaughter, Lily Erquitt.  Tom has numerous nieces and nephews. 

Tom was predeceased by his sister Marjorie Grate and brothers Willard Hanner and Walter Hanner, Jr.  

Cremation has taken place and a memorial service will be held at Atlanta Unity, 3597 Parkway Lane, Peachtree Corners, GA 30092 on Saturday, October 5, 2013 at 1:00 PM

Flowers are accepted or memorial donations may be made to Atlanta Unity, 3597 Parkway Lane, Peachtree Corners, GA  30092 or to a charity of your choice.  

The family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to Atlanta Hospice and the extraordinary caregivers at Kaden Homecare as well as the many caring friends of the family for their support.
