Obituary...............................
Charles Harman Cox, Jr., of
Atlanta, passed away on February 4, 2015 at the age of 84. He was born in
Atlanta, was an eagle scout, attended Boys High, and graduated from GMA in 1948.
He attended GA Tech, played on the basketball and tennis teams, and in 1951 he
entered the USAF in the Aviation Cadet Program, where he graduated and received
his Commissioning & Silver Wings in Oct of 1952. He was assigned the F-86
Saberjet to Korea, and was in the 51st Fighter-Interceptor Wing, 16th Sq at K-13
Suwon, Korea. In Korea, he flew with John Glenn, Buzz Aldrin, and Sam Johnson.
After completing his service in the USAF on Oct 25, 1955, he came back to
Atlanta, GA; was hired by Delta Air Lines; and had a wonderful flying career for
34 years! He also met the love of his life, Rebecca Ann Adams, on Oct. 25,1955,
got engaged to her on Oct 25, 1956, and they married on May 11, 1957. He and Ann
raised their family in Atlanta and were involved in church activities and many
social groups. During that time, as ALTA President, he founded The League Play.
He also devoted his time to playing tournaments, directing Pro tennis events in
Atlanta, and teaching his 3 children to play tennis. He loved the game and
realized it truly is a "game for a lifetime!" He retired from Delta in Sept
1990, and Charles & Ann founded Eagle Rest Ministry in the North GA
mountains near Dahlonega. They opened their home as the Directors for retreats
and Christian counseling, and also enjoyed visits from their 6 grandchildren,
especially during Camp MiniPops! He also continued to play tennis tournaments
achieving #1 rankings in GA in all age groups between 35-75; and with his son
Bud, through Super Senior Father/Son where they won 4 National titles! He was an
amazing husband, father, Pops, brother, father-in-law, son, friend, pilot, and
mentor to us all; and we will all miss his humor and sweet smile. He is
survived by his wife of 57 years: Rebecca Adams Cox; son: Charles H. Cox, III;
daughter: Catherine Cox Zampini and her husband, Ron; son-in-law: Hall F.
McKinley; 6 Grandchildren: David (Jenny), Paul (Katie), & Elizabeth Zampini,
Allison, Hall IV, & Caroline McKinley; and 1 Great Grandchild, Daniel
Zampini. He was preceded in death by his parents: Charles Harman Cox, Sr. and
Grace Boyd Goldsmith Cox; Sister, Grace Goldsmith Cox; and daughter Rebecca Cox
McKinley. We are very thankful for the love and care that was provided by all
the dedicated workers at the Village of Germantown these last several years of
Charlie's life. To God be the Glory! A visitation and funeral service are set
for Monday, Feb 9, 2015 at Peachtree Presbyterian Church in Atlanta, Ga. A
