Borden,
James William Captain James "Jim" Borden, 88, was born in Park Rapids, MN, on
October 2, 1927 and made his final takeoff on June 30, 2016. Jim grew up in
Wadena, MN, and spent his high school years in Fergus Falls, MN, where he was
active in the Boy Scouts of America and earned Eagle Scout rank. Jim entered the
U.S. Navy in 1945, serving honorably for four years as a Machinist's Mate aboard
the hospital ship Bountiful and the tanker Monongahela. While stationed at
Okinawa, Japan, Jim's interest in flying grew and he attained his private
pilot's license. Following military service, Jim used his G.I. Bill to attend
the Spartan School of Aeronautics in Tulsa, OK, where he completed additional
pilot ratings. In 1953, Jim joined Northwest Airlines as a commercial pilot
where he flew domestic and overseas routes for nearly 34 years until his
retirement in 1987 as a senior Captain. Jim's life centered on aviation, and as
a pilot he flew most everything in the inventory from the DC-4 up to the 747.
Once retired, Jim remained active as a Northwest Airlines historian having
accumulated extensive files of archival research over the years. Jim owned
several private aircraft himself and enjoyed belonging to numerous
aviation-related groups such as the Minnesota Civil Air Patrol, Quiet Birdmen,
and Marginal Aviation. In addition to writing stories and contributing to
aviation history, Jim enjoyed restoring antique airplanes, served on the board
of the Minnesota Aviation Hall of Fame, and was an antique car and tractor
enthusiast. Jim is survived by his sister Virginia (Bill) Lee of Annandale, MN.
Jim married Jean Bungarden in 1955, and is survived by his former wife Jean and
their five children: Brian (Jaci) of Colorado Springs, CO; Lee (Melissa) of
Scottsdale, AZ; Lynn (Mike Stein) of Minneapolis, MN, and grandchildren Holly,
Shelly and Nicholas; Kelly (Heather) of Ridgecrest, CA, and grandsons Ethan and
Sam; and Kevin (Caroline) of Mount Pleasant, SC, and granddaughters Meredith and
Emma. In 1985, Jim remarried Irene Norgren Casber, and is survived by Irene's
three children: Sandra (Bob) Wise of Arlington, VA, and grandchildren Robert and
Alexandra; Cary of Vail, CO, and granddaughter Kelly; and Tracy (Kent) Moon of
Salt Lake City, UT. Jim and Irene relocated from the Twin Cities area to return
to his boyhood home of Park Rapids in 1991. Funeral services will be held on
Wednesday, July 6, 2016 at 11:00 AM at Cease Funeral Home, Park Rapids, MN.
