___ PCN FLIGHT WEST is sponsored by the Pilot Communication Network and is a service of the PCN provided for the Delta Pilot Retired family of pilot groups. Flight West was started and is maintained to accomplish two main goals. After we become aware of a colleague who has Flown West, 1. We aim to produce a “timely” notice sent to our community that allows for support and interaction from our group toward the grieving family of our friend and colleague. 2. Then, we aim to “archive” that notice on our Flown West Blogspot as a lasting accessible place of Dignity and Honor of our colleague for family legacy and posterity. Contributor contact info is generally removed before posting (unless requested otherwise).

NC/RC/NWA/DL Capt. Gary L. Vopal

~ IN MEMORY ~
NC/RC/NWA/DL Capt. Gary L. Vopal
June 15, 1950 ~ August 19, 2018

As noted in the April 2019 issue of the Air Line Pilot magazine’s In Memoriam column, the passing of retired North Central/Republic/Northwest Airlines/Delta Air Lines pilot Captain Gary Lee Vopal, age 68.  I believe Gary was born/raised in Wisconsin.  Friends write that he first joined North Central Airlines in 1978, and he would have made the various mergers.
I was not able to locate an online obituary.  In lieu of an online obituary notice, please see news below that was received from aviation colleagues.  If anyone has additional information and/or corrections, we would appreciate hearing from you.
            Thank you,
                ~ Carol for the PCN

Subject: Passing of Gary Vopal
......Gary Vopal, passed away shortly after 9 PM EDT at his home in Lenoir City, TN on Sunday, August 19th.
Gary retired on the B747 a few years ago. He started with North Central in 1978.
For the last five years Gary has been dealing with a cancer that formed around his Pancreas. He underwent
several years of treatment which held it in check after an initial operation. However when
I last talked with him in July, they were trying another type which was causing
him a lot of discomfort. He set a survival record of years for such a cancer.
He will be cremated, and as of now Linda doesn't know of any plans for a service

In addition to Linda he is survived by a grown son, daughter, and two grandchildren...................
