Obituary..................
ALAN STUART POPWELL, 68, of Lake Martin, Alabama passed away
on Friday March 29, 2019 at East Alabama Medical Center in Opelika, Alabama. A
memorial service honoring his life will be held on Friday April 26, 2019 at 1:00
PM at Auburn First Baptist Church with Dr. Tripp Martin officiating. Visitation
with the family will follow the service in the church fellowship
hall.
Stuart, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and brother,
was born April 26, 1950 in Clanton, Alabama. He received degrees from Auburn
University and the University of Southern California. Stuart served his country
through the Montgomery Air National Guard and the USAF, being one of few
selected to fly the U2 spy plane. Following his military service, he continued
his career in flying with Northwest and Delta Airlines for 26 years piloting
both domestic and international routes. Retirement in 2015 allowed him more time
to travel for leisure, visiting six of the seven continents. He had a passion
for cruising, woodworking, supporting Auburn sports -especially basketball - and
enjoying lake life from his deck.
Stuart was preceded in death by his parents, Ben and Edna
Popwell of Clanton, Alabama. He is survived by his wife and best friend of 47
years, Penny Comer Popwell; his sister, Cynthia Popwell, of Boca Raton, Florida;
his four children - Mark (Jamie) Popwell, of Firth, Idaho; David Popwell, of
Lizella, Georgia; Luke Popwell of Lake Martin, Alabama; Laura (Ryan) Gray of San
Diego, California; his brother-in-law John R (Cathy) Comer of Lilburn, Georgia;
12 grandchildren, 1 grandson-in-law, 2 nieces, 2 nephews and his dear friends,
“The Auburn Gang”.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made
to Auburn First Baptist Church, 128 East Glenn Avenue, Auburn, AL
36830.
