___ PCN FLIGHT WEST is sponsored by the Pilot Communication Network and is a service of the PCN provided for the Delta Pilot Retired family of pilot groups. Flight West was started and is maintained to accomplish two main goals. After we become aware of a colleague who has Flown West, 1. We aim to produce a “timely” notice sent to our community that allows for support and interaction from our group toward the grieving family of our friend and colleague. 2. Then, we aim to “archive” that notice on our Flown West Blogspot as a lasting accessible place of Dignity and Honor of our colleague for family legacy and posterity. Contributor contact info is generally removed before posting (unless requested otherwise).

Obituary…………….David Kerr of Castleton, VA, a devoted husband, father, pilot and friend, made his final landing on Monday, June 24, 2019. He concluded his journey the same way he had traveled it: shaped by faith, surrounded by family, marked by good humor, and committed to life itself, without surrender. He was 72.

Throughout his life, David demonstrated the pilot’s ability to be present in each moment while also having limitless horizons. Born into a missionary family on July 12, 1946, he traveled globally, living and working in the West Indies, Barbados, Guyana, and India. Through these travels and years at Kodaikanal International School in Tamil Nadu, India, David developed his passions for people, culture, travel, cuisine, and a good story. He learned to love the Maker, and everything He made.

His family returned to the West Coast where he graduated from Fremont High School and then from Warner Pacific College, with a B.A. in Biological Sciences. Upon graduation, David enlisted in the U.S. Navy to pursue his interest in aviation. He was commissioned in 1968, earned his Wings of Gold in 1969, and served through 1972.

David once described aviation as a tapestry of ability, technology, and romance and said he relished the range of perspectives it provided. These attributes defined his life. He met Evelyn Marie Everhart, a flight attendant, in September of 1973. They were married on June 7, 1975. Together they continued to explore and share the world with their family, in part through David’s long career as a Captain with Delta Airlines. He remained active until the end, working on advances in aviation technology as a contractor to the Federal Aviation Administration.

When on the ground, David cherished spending time with his grandchildren, reading, running, hiking the trails of Rappahannock with his beloved dog Emmie, and refueling on the beaches of the Outer Banks. He and Evelyn were early parishioners of St. Peter Catholic Church in Amissville, VA and ushers and frequent patrons of the Castleton Festival.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Aaron and Kathryn Kerr, and his wife, Evelyn. He is survived by his brother Philip and three children (Christopher Matthew and his wife Diana of Ashburn, VA; CariAnne and her husband Daryl Kreml of Sudbury, MA; and Keirsten Davena and her husband Paul Brown of Amissville, VA). He was the proud Pop Pop to eleven grandchildren.

David loved life and wanted it for others. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society (www.cancer.org), P.O. Box 22478 Oklahoma City, OK 73123.

A visitation will be Sunday, June 30, 2019 from 6-8pm at Moser Funeral Home, Warrenton, VA (540-347-3431). A Funeral Mass will take place Monday, July 1, at 10:30am with a burial and reception to follow at St. Peter Catholic Church, 12762 Lee Hwy, Washington, VA. On-line condolences can be made at moserfuneralhome.com

………………….A deep love of the good things in life came from her love of life itself, and devotion to its Maker. Baptized Evelyn Marie, the daughter of Virgil and Elinor Triplett Everhart, she would go on to be an early parishioner of St. Peter Catholic Church in Washington, VA where she taught religious education. She was the wife of David Kerr from June 7, 1975 until her death, and the mother of three children (Christopher Matthew and his wife Diana of Ashburn, VA; CariAnne and her husband Daryl Kreml of Sudbury, MA; and Keirsten Davena and her husband Paul Brown of Amissville, VA).
