~ IN MEMORY ~
DL Capt. Robert Michael Burns
January 11, 1941 - February 7, 2020
Friends have notified us with this news of the passing of
retired Delta pilot Captain Robert Michael Burns, age 79. Captain Burns joined Delta Air Lines 04-01-1963. He is survived by his wife Kelley, also his
son and grandchildren.
Friend and colleague Capt. Harry Ballance writes: “He was recovering from a back operation in a
convalescent center. Apparently it was cardiac arrest. Mom sue for Delta for a
number of years, starting, I believe in 1963. He retired with the group known
as The Fabulous Five Hundred in the late 1990s, as a 1011 line Check Airman. He
flew for the next 10 or so years in the private sector as a Captain in several
Part 135 and 91 operations. Bob was based in Atlanta, New Orleans, Miami, and
Cincinnati. I had the pleasure of flying with him for many of those 10 years in
the corporate world after we both retired from Delta. He was a true
professional, and a good traveling companion.”
The funeral home website offers a brief obituary online at
A full obituary is forthcoming and Kelley will keep us posted
as to a celebration of life event.
