Obituary : HEWITT, John J
John James Hewitt, Jr. 85, of Dallas, Texas passed
away on January 13,2022 after a period of declining health. John was born on
February 27, 1936, in Lake City, Florida. He was predeceased by his parents,
John James Hewitt and Helen Cannon.
John is survived by his partner in life and in
matrimony, William Umana. Their relationship of many years was characterized by
enjoyment of life, friends and relatives. In addition to his spouse, John is
survived by his niece, Meredith Whitehead and three nephews: John, James and
Jeff Moseley.
Though born in Lake City, Florida, John spent most
of his early life in Blakely, Georgia. Upon graduation from high school, he
attended Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia and was graduated on December 20,
1958, with a Bachelor of Arts degree. On January 7, 1959, John entered the U.S.
Navy where he served with distinction as a U.S Navy pilot. John was one of six
pilots to receive the Distinguished Flying Cross for extraordinary achievement
in aerial flight on November 13, 1962. This honor was bestowed for his
participation in the first low-level photographic flight over Cuba on October
23, 1962, during the Cuban missile crisis. Following his outstanding career as
a Navy Pilot, John re-entered civilian life and worked as a commercial airline
pilot for Delta Airlines.
John and William shared many activities with their
friends, including cruises and trips abroad. In recent years, his health
prohibited him from being active as previously, but he will be remembered with
affection by his partner and many friends for his southern charm and outgoing
personality. Following cremation, John's ashes will be interred in the National
Cemetery in Grand Prairie on Thursday, February 17, 2022 at 11:30 am.
In lieu of flowers, please send any memorial gifts
