Notice of passing….retired Hughes AirWest/Republic/Northwest Airlines pilot Captain Capt. Robert M. "Mike" Rhodes, age 74.  Mike is survived by his wife Sheila, and by his children and grandchildren.

Obituary : Capt. Robert M. “Mike” Rhodes age 74 from Fremont, Ohio was embraced by his heavenly father on this day – Sunday, February 13, 2022 at his home in Scottsdale, AZ. Mike was born Sept. 14th, 1947 in Fremont, Ohio to Donald (Dusty) and Marcella (Sally) Rhodes. Mike attended all 12 years at St. Joseph Catholic Schools graduating in 1965. Mike had the privilege of being a member of the class of the 1965 football team which is the only team in the school’s history that went undefeated for three consecutive years, a record that remains to this date. Mike was selected and inducted into St. Joe’s Sports Hall of Fame both individually and as a team member of the Class of 65 Football Team. Mike attended BGSU graduating in the spring of 1970.

Mike joined the USMC in 1970 earning his Naval Aviator Wings and was discharged Honorably as a Captain in 1976. Highlights include receiving the finest jet aircraft training in the world, Aircraft Carrier Operations, being selected and piloting for the Commander of Fleet Marine Force Atlantic. He remained friends with his Marine brothers throughout his life.

Mike started his airline career with Hughes Air West in 1976, through the airline mergers he found himself also working for Republic Airlines, Northwest Airlines and retired prior to the Delta merger. Mike’s aviation career lasted 37 years, Capt. Rhodes also served as an Instructor and Check Airman throughout his career.. Capt. Rhodes total flying time approached 25,000 hours and his travels have taken him around the globe.

Mike was a contributor and member to the American Legion, VFW, USMC Heritage Foundation, among others. Surviving are his wife Sheila along with daughters Carrie Rhodes (Tom Carroll) of Rim Rock, Az. Kathleen (Valerie Hurt) of Los Angeles and a son Michael of Scottsdale, Az.( Suzie), sister Cheryl Reser (Thom) Fremont, Ohio. Step daughters Carrie Conklin and Shannon Emblin both living in Scottsdale, Az; 7 grandchildren, 2 step grandchildren. Mike’s Father (Dusty), Mother (Sally), brother David (Hoss), brother John (Jack) Rhodes preceded him in death.

Mike’s proudest accomplishment in life was his effort in raising his 3 children as a single parent. He followed his father’s example by always putting the emphasis on love of family, commitment, integrity, loyalty and honor, his father was a glowing example of these traits. Mike will be remembered for his quick wit, sense of humor and his kind and loving ways. A memorial service will be held Saturday, February 26 at 3:00 PM at Messinger Pinnacle Peak Mortuary. 8555 E. Pinnacle Peak Rd in Scottsdale, Arizona.

In Lieu of flowers, memorials preferred to American Cancer Society in the name of Mike Rhodes or the SJCC Booster Club, 308 Jackson St., Fremont, Ohio  43420.
