Obituary : Alvin Gregory Green

Alvin Gregory "Greg" Green, 72, of Newnan, Georgia passed away at his residence on October 24, 2022.

Greg was born in Henderson, Tennessee on April 17, 1950, to Marianne Jackson Faulkner and Clyde Jones Green. As a child, Greg excelled in sports and enjoyed spending time on his grandparents' farm in Rutherford, Tennessee.

Greg graduated from Chester County High School in 1968, lettering in baseball and football. Upon graduation, Greg received a baseball scholarship to a junior college and an appointment to the Air Force Academy; however, he enrolled at Memphis State University to pursue his interest in becoming a high school coach. While at Memphis State, he enlisted in the Air Force Reserve Officers Training Corps (AFROTC) unit which afforded him the opportunity to participate in an AFROTC field training encampment at Forbes Air Force Base in Topeka, Kansas. During this training, Greg received aircraft and aircrew indoctrination which revealed his innate aptitude to become a pilot.

In 1972, he graduated with a bachelor's degree in Education and was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in the United States Air Force. Shortly after being commissioned, Greg was selected for the Pilot Training Academy at Laredo Air Force Base in Laredo, Texas. In 1973, Greg received his "wings," graduating in the top four of the Laredo 73-09 class with specific training in combat and reconnaissance missions to retrieve military personnel missing in action (MIA) and prisoners of war (POW) remaining in Southeast Asia. After Laredo, he was stationed at several Air Force bases across the southeastern United States and abroad to Sembach Air Force Base outside of Kaiserlautern, Germany to complete specialized training as a combat and reconnaissance pilot. Greg, call sign "Chili," served in various units in the U.S. Air Force: 4501 Tactical Fighter Replacement Squadron, 335th Tactical Fighter Squadron, "The Chiefs," and the 704th Tactical Air Support Squadron. While serving in the 704th Tactical Air Support Squadron in 1978, he received the "Well Done Award" for outstanding airmanship and professional performance during a hazardous situation for narrowly avoiding ejection and crashing into a populated German town by successfully restarting both engines at 500 feet above ground level. Greg was discharged from the U. S. Air Force in 1979 with the ranking of Captain, proficient in piloting F-4s, T-38s, U-2s, and OV-10A Tactical Air Crafts.

In 1979, Greg joined Delta Air Lines as a flight engineer for domestic flights flying out of Miami International Airport in Miami, Florida. In 1980, Greg transitioned his flight base to Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport in New Orleans, Louisiana. In 1982, Greg finally settled in his final flight base at Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport in Atlanta, Georgia until his retirement in 2003 as an International Captain. Following his retirement from Delta, he continued his work in aviation as a flight simulator instructor. Greg continued to work in various occupations as his health allowed.

As imagined, Greg enjoyed traveling domestically and abroad. He also appreciated the opportunity to work and spend time outdoors. He enjoyed reading, spending time with his family and friends, fellowship with his church and was an avid Tennessee Volunteers fan. He was dedicated to his family, his faith, and his deep love for the Lord. Throughout his long-term illness, he was determined to keep his mind and body actively engaged and build stronger relationships with his family. He is survived by his wife, Bonnie Maddox Green; two daughters, Amy (Eric) Miller of Thomaston, Georgia, and Jennifer Brooke Green of Decatur, Georgia; two sons, Glenn (Kaye) Howell of Sharpsburg, Georgia, and Sean (Alena) Green of Lilburn, Georgia; and four grandchildren, Riessa Jensen, Wesley Howell, Savannah Green, and Eleanor Green. He was also blessed with several dear friends that he and Bonnie considered family. He was preceded in death by his father, Clyde Jones Green, mother, Marianne Jackson Faulkner, and brother, Gentry Green.

A memorial service for Mr. Green will be held on November 12, 2022, at Crossroads Church located at 3260 Highway 16, Sharpsburg, Georgia 30277 at 11:00 am.

Obituary : John D. Patten

John D. Patten, resident of Wilson, Louisiana, known as Captain Patten to most and “Colonel” to others passed on to blue skies on October 27, 2022, at the age of 82. Captain Patten flew for Delta Air Lines for 31 years and retired as a senior captain of Delta’s flagship at the time, the Lockheed L-1011 TriStar. He loved Delta Air Lines and he flew many of their airplanes starting out on the DC-6, DC-7 as well as the DC-9 and 727. He worked in the training department for four years until his heart called him back to flying. Evergreen, Alabama, was his home but the desire to fly took him to Pensacola, Florida and he soloed in Milton, Florida. While flying for the Florida Development Commission in Tallahassee, Florida, he met the love of his life Patricia, Pat for short. Then Uncle Sam called him for duty and he served in Viet Nam flying helicopters and was an air traffic controller. After living in New Orleans, he yearned for the country and moved his family to East Feliciana Parish. He never gave up his love of flying and always loved to talk about his airplanes, a PT-17 Stearman and a motor glider. He rebuilt the Stearman and he enjoyed telling people that he flew with the buzzards. He was awarded the Master Airman Award by the FAA. He will surely be missed by those that knew him. Obituary of Ronald Clement Favaloro

The recent October issue of the AIR LINE PILOT magazine notes the passing of Southern/Northwest/Delta Air Lines pilot Captain Ronald Clement Favaloro, age 74.  Captain Favaloro first joined Southern Airways 04-03-1978 and made the various mergers retiring with Delta Air Lines in 2012.

Obituary : Ronald Clement Favaloro was born on 13 December 1947 in New Orleans, LA, to Angelo and Lois Favaloro. He died at the age of 74 on August 7, 2022 in Collierville, TN, where he had been a resident for over 25 years.

Ron spent his childhood in New Orleans, graduating from East Jefferson High School in 1965. He went on to earn an electrical engineering degree at Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge, LA and remained a rabid LSU fan to the end. GEAUX TIGERS! Upon graduation, he enlisted in the US Air Force, where he learned to fly which had been his childhood dream. He flew the C-130 aircraft and attained the rank of Captain. Ron was honorably discharged in 1978 and was immediately hired by Southern Airways. He had a 34 year long career flying many different aircraft and retired in 2012 from Delta Airlines. His last and favorite aircraft was the Airbus A330. He loved both seeing new places and meeting new crewmembers. His other love was boating, especially if he had a load of teenagers to throw from the tube.

Ron married Deborah Bruggenthies on March 8, 1986. They have two children, Angela Henderson (Hunter) of Collierville, TN, and Anthony Favaloro (Shelby) of West Lafayette, Indiana. He found great joy in his family and was overjoyed to welcome grandchildren, Asher Henderson and Roman Favaloro, in his last years. After retirement, he and Deborah enjoyed traveling, whether by air, on a cruise ship, or “roughing it” in their camper, the destination was unimportant compared to the time spent with family and friends.

Ronald became a Christian, trusting Jesus to be his Lord and Savior in 1985. He faithfully served the body of Christ in different capacities from then until God called him home. Ron was known for his love of others and his encouraging words and prayers. He will be greatly missed by both his family and friends. In lieu of flowers, Ron's wish was that a donations would be made to Life Choices of Memphis.

Obituary : arrangements in the care of Greenwood Funeral Home of Fort Worth, Texas…..

Derek Roland Cox, 56, passed away Monday, Aug. 22, 2022, in Fort Worth Texas after a long-fought battle with early onset Alzheimer’s.

Derek was born Dec. 16, 1965, in Fort Worth, Texas and spent his childhood in Haltom City, Texas. As he grew up, he loved and took great pride in playing baseball and football. So much so he requested to be buried with his football jersey. He always told stories about his friends in high school sports and all the great memories they shared. After high school, Derek attended the University of Texas at Arlington before transferring to Southeastern Oklahoma State University to pursue a career in flying. He always knew he wanted to be a pilot for as long as he could remember because of his many trips with his dad, Frank Roland, to Carswell Air Force Base. After completing school Derek was hired with American Eagle, Carnival Airlines, and Northwest Airlines which became part of Delta Airlines where he worked until his diagnosis. Shortly after beginning work at Northwest Airlines in 1998, he decided he was ready to “settle down” in his early thirties after many years of making very thrilling (many would say dangerous) memories with his friends in the air while off duty as commercial pilots. His idea of “settling down” involved a beautiful flight attendant that he somehow suckered into marrying him (yes, he would say that) after being stuck in the plane with her during a maintenance delay. He worked up the courage to ask her for her number while on the plane (he still has the piece of paper she wrote it on), and the rest is history. Derek and Sara were married on May 22, 1999, and their daughter Anna was born later that year. About five and a half years later, Derek and Sara had their son Gunnar which completed their family even though Derek would’ve had 10 kids if Sara would have agreed. His family always made fun of him for being like an old woman when he saw a baby, always wanting to talk to it and hold it even if it was a stranger’s child. Derek loved his family more than anything and was a great provider and protector. In his free time, he enjoyed practicing Jiu Jitsu and Tae Kwon Do in which he earned a black belt. He also loved spending time out on the lake with his friends and family and ended up living his last few years in a house on Eagle Mountain Lake where he could enjoy it right in his backyard each day. He will be greatly missed and will always be thought of anytime his family hears a loud boat engine or sees a plane fly by. Derek never thought of death as being sad, and although he loved his life, he knew that there was a better place waiting for him.

Derek is survived by his wife, Sara; their son, Gunnar; their daughter, Anna and her husband, Brett; his sister, Misty and her husband, Bryan, their boys Slade, Jake, Jaxon and Shane; his mother, Ginger Cox; and many more loving family members.

Derek was preceded in death by his dad, Frank Roland; and his grandparents, Maggie and Bob Bradley.

Obituary : Philip John Söderlind, a retired airline pilot and the loving husband of Marian “Rusty” Söderlind, passed away on August 22, 2022, at his home.

Philip was born in 1934 in Minneapolis, Minnesota, to first-generation Swedish parents, Eleanor Bymark and Dr. Ragnar Söderlind. Philip spent his formative years in Minneapolis and long summers and vacations at the family cabin in Marine on St. Croix, Minnesota. The cabin was a special place for the family as it was designed and built in 1924 by his father, Ragnar. During his extended stays in Marine on St. Croix, Philip enjoyed constructing makeshift boats, fishing, and playing badminton with his two older brothers. During the winter months, Philip would deer hunt along the river with his friend Tom Burris.

Phil, as he was known to friends and family, grew to love mechanics and engines. As a teenager, Phil constructed a hot rod from a 1935 Ford. The vehicle was featured in a popular hot rod magazine of the time. His early interests in cars and motorcycles led to a fascination with aeronautics. Phil began flying lessons at age 16, quickly moving from small single engine planes to twin engine DC-3’s. He was hired by North Central Airlines in 1956. At North Central, Phil was quickly promoted to captain at only 23 years of age. Phil’s career in the airline industry spanned over four decades.  He flew everywhere in the continental United States, Osaka, Japan, South Korea, Malaysia, Singapore, Philippines, and Australia. He became a leader in his field, piloting large 747-200 jumbo jets and eventually being hired to write operation manuals for the Boeing 757.

While stationed in Chicago, Phil met a young flight attendant named Marian “Rusty” Morgan. Rusty loved to tell the story of how she had a crush on the handsome captain and would trade flights with her fellow flight attendants to acquire more time around Philip. Philip and Rusty fell in love and eventually got married in 1966 and started a family. The young family moved from the Chicago area and settled in Scottsdale, Arizona in 1976. Rusty & Phil were married for over 50 years until Rusty passed away, due to complications of Alzheimer’s disease, in 2018.

Phil retired on his birthday, June 19, 1994, and began secondary careers. He worked for NATCO in Eagan, Minnesota, training new pilots. While at NATCO, Philip met Aviv Kivity, co-founder of Avionitek, a software company which developed the first onboard flight computer. Phil worked with the Israeli company over several years, consulting on pilot interaction with computer technology.

In Phil’s later years, always looking for ways to learn new skills, he devoted his spare time to purchasing and repairing all kinds of mechanical clocks. He had a special interest in cuckoo clocks. He would often repair clocks for his neighbors and would sometimes give them away as gifts. Well known in his local community, Phil left everyone who met him, including the postman, dry cleaner, dog groomer, housekeeper, & financial advisor with fond memories and kind words for him.

Philip was a well-known animal lover throughout his life, always having at least one dog. His last beloved dog, Toby, was by his side when he passed away at home.

Philip is survived by his two children, Jenny Ouimette and Philip Soderlind II, as well as grandchildren: Nelson, Griffin, Hudson, Bennett, Matt, Chris, Jake, Nancy, and Henry.

Obituary: David Ephraim Bates, 84, one of the most extraordinary souls to walk the earth, passed away of natural causes on October 15, 2022.

David was born on March 22, 1938 in Wanship, Utah, the community that was settled by his ancestors and where he lived and served his entire life.  David grew up working the family farm and herding sheep in the mountains around Wanship. After a stint in the U.S. Air Force, David became an esteemed airline pilot for United Airlines, Eastern Airlines, Western Airlines, and finally Delta Airlines, where he retired after almost 40 years of traveling the world. But his true profession was always farming.  When David was not flying, he was either fixing fences, growing hay, or taking care of his cows and horses.

David was a natural musician from his childhood, and mastered several instruments ranging from the tuba to the accordion.  David developed a particular passion for bluegrass music, and played his banjo and guitar almost daily. David entertained the community playing in several bluegrass bands over the years, and was a staple in the Utah bluegrass community.

David’s greatest passion and top priority in life was his four boys. He loved them unconditionally, and taught them the value of hard work, honesty, kindness, and music. David was adored and revered by everyone who knew him, and his immense influence will be widely missed. We are all better because of him.

David is survived by his wife, Susan Wood Swider Bates, by his four sons, Daniel Ephraim Bates (Kacey and children Calli Jo, Maryssa Ann and Maci Christine), Benjamin Will Bates (Anna and children Bentley Will and Asher Everest), Thomas John Bates, and Taylor Jay Bates (Taylor Lian), and by his siblings, Ernest Allan Bates, Joyce Stembridge (Wendell), Val Bates (Julee), and Charlotte Rehfield (Rich).  David is predeceased by his parents, Fay and Mae Bates.

A funeral service will be conducted at the Wanship Ward church building at 12:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 22, followed by a graveside service at the Wanship Cemetery and a luncheon for family and friends at the Wanship Ward church building directly following the graveside service.

Jana Christine Crumbliss, aged 67, of Collierville passed away Monday, November 16, 2015. Jana was born and raised in Marked Tree, AK.
