Obituary : Alvin Gregory Green
Alvin Gregory "Greg" Green, 72, of
Newnan, Georgia passed away at his residence on October 24, 2022.
Greg was born in Henderson, Tennessee on April 17,
1950, to Marianne Jackson Faulkner and Clyde Jones Green. As a child, Greg
excelled in sports and enjoyed spending time on his grandparents' farm in
Rutherford, Tennessee.
Greg graduated from Chester County High School in
1968, lettering in baseball and football. Upon graduation, Greg received a
baseball scholarship to a junior college and an appointment to the Air Force
Academy; however, he enrolled at Memphis State University to pursue his
interest in becoming a high school coach. While at Memphis State, he enlisted
in the Air Force Reserve Officers Training Corps (AFROTC) unit which afforded
him the opportunity to participate in an AFROTC field training encampment at
Forbes Air Force Base in Topeka, Kansas. During this training, Greg received
aircraft and aircrew indoctrination which revealed his innate aptitude to
become a pilot.
In 1972, he graduated with a bachelor's degree in
Education and was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in the United States Air
Force. Shortly after being commissioned, Greg was selected for the Pilot
Training Academy at Laredo Air Force Base in Laredo, Texas. In 1973, Greg
received his "wings," graduating in the top four of the Laredo 73-09
class with specific training in combat and reconnaissance missions to retrieve
military personnel missing in action (MIA) and prisoners of war (POW) remaining
in Southeast Asia. After Laredo, he was stationed at several Air Force bases
across the southeastern United States and abroad to Sembach Air Force Base
outside of Kaiserlautern, Germany to complete specialized training as a combat
and reconnaissance pilot. Greg, call sign "Chili," served in various
units in the U.S. Air Force: 4501 Tactical Fighter Replacement Squadron, 335th
Tactical Fighter Squadron, "The Chiefs," and the 704th Tactical Air
Support Squadron. While serving in the 704th Tactical Air Support Squadron in
1978, he received the "Well Done Award" for outstanding airmanship
and professional performance during a hazardous situation for narrowly avoiding
ejection and crashing into a populated German town by successfully restarting
both engines at 500 feet above ground level. Greg was discharged from the U. S.
Air Force in 1979 with the ranking of Captain, proficient in piloting F-4s,
T-38s, U-2s, and OV-10A Tactical Air Crafts.
In 1979, Greg joined Delta Air Lines as a flight
engineer for domestic flights flying out of Miami International Airport in
Miami, Florida. In 1980, Greg transitioned his flight base to Louis Armstrong
New Orleans International Airport in New Orleans, Louisiana. In 1982, Greg
finally settled in his final flight base at Hartsfield-Jackson International
Airport in Atlanta, Georgia until his retirement in 2003 as an International
Captain. Following his retirement from Delta, he continued his work in aviation
as a flight simulator instructor. Greg continued to work in various occupations
as his health allowed.
As imagined, Greg enjoyed traveling domestically
and abroad. He also appreciated the opportunity to work and spend time
outdoors. He enjoyed reading, spending time with his family and friends,
fellowship with his church and was an avid Tennessee Volunteers fan. He was
dedicated to his family, his faith, and his deep love for the Lord. Throughout
his long-term illness, he was determined to keep his mind and body actively
engaged and build stronger relationships with his family. He is survived by his
wife, Bonnie Maddox Green; two daughters, Amy (Eric) Miller of Thomaston,
Georgia, and Jennifer Brooke Green of Decatur, Georgia; two sons, Glenn (Kaye)
Howell of Sharpsburg, Georgia, and Sean (Alena) Green of Lilburn, Georgia; and
four grandchildren, Riessa Jensen, Wesley Howell, Savannah Green, and Eleanor
Green. He was also blessed with several dear friends that he and Bonnie
considered family. He was preceded in death by his father, Clyde Jones Green,
mother, Marianne Jackson Faulkner, and brother, Gentry Green.
A memorial service for Mr. Green will be held on
November 12, 2022, at Crossroads Church located at 3260 Highway 16, Sharpsburg,
Georgia 30277 at 11:00 am.
