___ PCN FLIGHT WEST is sponsored by the Pilot Communication Network and is a service of the PCN provided for the Delta Pilot Retired family of pilot groups. Flight West was started and is maintained to accomplish two main goals. After we become aware of a colleague who has Flown West, 1. We aim to produce a “timely” notice sent to our community that allows for support and interaction from our group toward the grieving family of our friend and colleague. 2. Then, we aim to “archive” that notice on our Flown West Blogspot as a lasting accessible place of Dignity and Honor of our colleague for family legacy and posterity. Contributor contact info is generally removed before posting (unless requested otherwise).

The family of Mel Suggett is sad to announce his passing on Feb. 12, 2023. Mel was born and raised on a small farm in Woodland California. His father, Mel Sr., worked in the rice mills along the Sacramento river and his mother worked to raise his three half-siblings and younger sister. He graduated from Woodland HS in 1951 and travelled north to Washington state on a football scholarship. At Olympic College in Bremerton WA he studied forestry but after 2 years he found his true passion in joining the Airforce. There he learned to fly cargo planes that were needed in the Korean war and after his service he was hired as a commercial pilot for Northwest Airlines. Mel worked for Northwest Airlines from 1958 to 1993- retiring as a captain flying 747's. He was well respected in the airline community as someone with integrity, intelligence and a kind demeanor. Mel was married twice in his life with both ending in the death of his spouse. His first marriage was to Barbara Thoemke, which was tragically brief, and then his second was to Evelyn Knox which lasted almost 60 years. Together Mel and Evie had two children , Gregory and Leslie, with whom they shared many family adventures. Mel loved nature, history, flying, and above all his family and friends. His memory will be cherished by all who knew him. He is survived by his daughter Leslie Suggett, grandchildren Brigid (Suggett) Graf, Mary Elizabeth Suggett, Kathryn Suggett, Madison (Gorman) Elliott, and Sidney Suggett and his great-grandchildren Mary Henesey Suggett and Alana Graf. He was preceded in death by his wife Evelyn Suggett (12/28/22), his son Gregory E. Suggett, his parents Melden and Josephine, and his sisters and brothers: Patti Lou (Suggett) Latimer, Leona (Quist) Serrels, Peter Quist, and Robert Quist. There will be a short graveside service at the Woodland Cemetery on May 22, 2023 at 11AM.
