DL Capt. Kenneth V. Sollberger

Updated obituary for DL Capt. Kenneth Sollberger…………..

https://www.bagnellfuneralhome.com/obituaries/kenneth-sollberger-sr

Kenneth Vaughan Sollberger Sr.

July 9, 1940 — April 18, 2023

Mandeville, LA

Kenneth Vaughan Sollberger passed away of pancreatic cancer on April 18, 2023 at the age of 82 in his Mandeville, LA home surrounded by his loving family. He is survived by his beloved wife of 31 years, Marie Fulgham Sollberger; his loved brother L. Albert Sollberger, Jr. (Dianne); and his cherished children, K. Vaughan Sollberger, Jr. (Stefani); Peter R. Sollberger (Edie); Meredith H. Harmon (Jason); and Meagan H. Garcia (Mike). He is also survived by his five adored grandchildren: Avery P. Sollberger, Adelaide V. Sollberger, Luke F. Harmon, Sawyer R. Sollberger, and Macie M. Garcia. Loved nephews and niece L. Craig Sollberger (Dee); Brian D. Sollberger (Sandy); and Laurie S. Thomas.  He was born July 29, 1940 in Jackson, MS and preceded in death by his parents L. Albert “Solly” Sollberger, Sr.  and Mary Ann “Maw Maw” Hegwood.

He spent his childhood in Slidell, LA graduating from Slidell High School in 1958.  For his entire life, the marshes of the Rigolets, waters of Lake Pontchartrain, and swamps of Pearl River provided him adventures of fishing, shrimping, crabbing, and hunting with family and friends. He worked for his Uncle Jules at Lonestar Cement Tugboats on the MS River while attending LSU. He lived in the ‘LSU Stadium’ Student Dorm, graduating in 1963.

Ken married Martha Randolph Blackman in 1964 and began his service in the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam War.  He served as a Lt. Navy Pilot stationed on the U.S.S. Shangri-La in the Pacific. Later he joined the rare breed of Navy Hurricane Hunters serving as Commander through 1969. He and his crew flew through & directly into the eye of the worst storms on earth while collecting crucial data to protect lives & property, as he did during Hurricane Camille in August 1969.

He was employed by Delta Airlines for 31 years from 1969-2000 retiring as Captain on the B-767. He made many lifelong airline friends taking them to his fish camps for wonderful days of shrimping, duck hunting, fishing, crabbing, and shucking oysters.

In 1992, Ken married Marie, Delta Flight Attendant, and they blended their two families that have shared much love and adventures together over the years. He thoroughly enjoyed his post-retirement fishing and hunting for 23 years...especially teaching his grandkids, when they would listen, as he often said. He was a serious competitor for the past 18 years in the Northshore Lake Pontchartrain Fishing Rodeo, especially enjoying their weigh-ins and fish stories.  He holds the current Rodeo Records for Flounder (7.2# in 2010) and Calcutta (14.22# also in 2010).

He was a man of varied interests - operated two shrimp boats; a voracious reader and daily crossword, sudoku & wordle enthusiast; lifelong hunter & fisherman from an early age; loved his many Labrador Retrievers; built cypress pirogues; gardened & grafted camellias in his lovely backyard filled with birds & hummers; followed LSU sports faithfully & energetically; widely known for his highly prized Christmas Gifts of homemade salsa; teacher of card games & dominoes to his competitive grandchildren.  Most of all, he was a devoted, loving, patient and generous Husband, Father, Granddad and Uncle who treasured most in life “his time spent with his family”.  He was so thankful for his full life and his wise & giving spirit will be greatly missed by all that knew him. His Celebration of Life will be on May 20, 2023.  Those wishing to make a contribution in Ken’s memory, please know that St. Jude’s Hospital was his most beloved charity.

NWA Capt. Claud Leslie Johnson

NWA Capt. Claud Leslie Johnson

January 24, 1925 ~ April 8, 2023

From the Northwest Airlines Pilots group/rnpa-forum site……………..

NWA Captain Claud 'Les' Johnson, age 98, died on April 8, 2023 in

Lindstrom, MN. Les was born in Taylor's Falls, MN in 1925 and grew up in

Shafer, Minnesota where he was the youngest of five children. During WWII

Les served as a Naval Aviator and after the war was hired by NWA on July 11,

1949. His extensive range of aircraft flown at NWA will be covered in his

forthcoming RNPA obituary.

I had the pleasure of flying with Les on the DC-10 early upon its arrival on

property at NWA. Trips with Les remain some of my best NWA flying memories.

Les went onto fly the 747 Classic and I believe flew as Second Officer on

the 747 Classic after his age 60 Captain mandatory retirement.

Les was laid to rest on April 15, 2023 in Lindstrom, MN.

Our colleague was truly a gentlemen's gentleman.

Claud Leslie (Les) Johnson died at the age of 98.

He was born in 1925 and was from Shafer. He attended Chi-Hi high school and served in the Navy. Les worked for Northwest Airlines.

Les is survived by his sons Steve and Daniel Johnson, his daughters Susan Ewert and Jennifer Munger. Preceding him in death were his wife Lillian Bloom and son Gregory Johnson.

Claud Leslie "Les" Johnson

January 24, 1925 - April 08, 2023

Claud Leslie (Les)Johnson was born in Taylor’s Falls in 1925 and grew up in Shafer, Minnesota

where he was the youngest of five children. He walked through a wooded lot to the Shafer

elementary school and later attended Chi-Hi where he played basketball and 6-man football. To

make ends meet during the Depression, Less family raised guinea pigs in their basement and

would sell the ‘pigs’ to the University of Minnesota.

Les fell in love with Lillian Bloom when he heard her sing with the Junior Mission Band of Center

City Lutheran Church. Les saw stars when Lillian sat next to him in the back seat of the bus going

to High School basketball games. Les’ mom rode in the front of the same bus, as a chaperone.

During World War II, Les enlisted in the Navy and he loved it. He appreciated the structure and

three square meals a day. It was where Les learned to fly airplanes, following in the footsteps of

his older brother, Darrel But Les experienced tragedy, when Darrell was killed while serving on

an aircraft carrier in the Pacific.

In 1945 near the end of the war, while Les was stationed in Corpus Christi, Texas, Lillian took the

train from Minnesota to visit Les. They got married with three people in attendance in addition to

the pastor and his wife, who played the organ. Les was under-age and had to call his mother in

Shafer to get permission to get married, which was enthusiastically granted.

Sorrow struck again when Les and Lil’s first child was born with Down’s syndrome. But Gregory

Brought joy to their hearts with his affectionate nature and his energetic dancing. Gregory turned

heads with his robust singing of Handel’s Hallelujah Chorus.

Les and Lil went on to have four more children, 13 grand-children, and over 20 greatgrandchildren and great-great grandchildren, with more on the way.

After the war Les continued flying, doing some crop dusting in Montana. In 1950 Les signed on

with Northwest Airlines. In those early days, Les was laid off every winter when the airline

suspended operation. One of Les’ early flights was to Tokyo, Japan. Les would fly a DC-4 with

three stops for re-fueling. The stops were Edmonton, Anchorage, and Shimya, an Aleutian island.

In his later career, he flew747s to Tokyo and beyond.

Les took a temporary position flying for Olympic airlines and lived with Lil and the youngest

children for a short time in Athens, Greece. In 1975, Les’ flying career was interrupted when he

had a stroke while flying a plane home from Chicago. Eventually, Les was able to rejoin the airline

when he recovered from the stroke.

After retirement, Les bought an Aeronca airplane that had two seats and a top speed of 80 mph.

Les kept it at the airport in Osceola, Wisconsin.

Les was preceded in death by his parents and four siblings, his wife Lillian, and son, Gregory. He is

survived by son, Steve (wife Jerri),son Daniel (wife, Susan), daughter Susan Ewert(husband

James), and daughter Jennifer Munger (husband, Scott).

Les has always had a strong faith and has trusted in the redemptive sacrifice of Jesus Christ.

Because of his faith in Christ, he has always been active in church activities and loved to study the

Bible. Les has entered into the arms of Jesus.

Obituary for Leland "Lee" Larson  :  Leland “Lee” Thomas Larson, 87, traded in his pilot wings for golden wings on April 7, 2023, surrounded by 3 generations of family.

He was born June 28, 1935, in Grundy Center, Iowa, to Jordan and Mildred Larson. When Lee was a child, his father Jordan became Superintendent of Schools in Mt. Vernon, NY, moving the family from Iowa. In Mt. Vernon, Lee began many lifelong friendships and met Arlene Wood, who would become his wife 35 years later. Lee attended Iowa State University and decided to enroll in the United States Air Force in aviation cadet training, where he served for 10 years, flew in Vietnam and was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross.

In 1960 he married Catherine (Cathy) Kurtessis and they had 4 beautiful daughters, Victoria, Jennifer, Kristen and Andrea. They moved from New York to California and settled in Plantation, Florida. Although he had originally planned to stay in the Air Force, moving around with a family of 6 was not enticing anymore so Lee decided to pursue being an airline pilot. Lee began flying with Pan American World Airways in 1969. He and Cathy divorced after 18 years of marriage and Lee moved to Key Largo.

In 1982 Lee flew to NY and a childhood friend, Tony, reunited Lee with Arlene, who was also divorced and had one child, Greg. Lee and Arlene married and shortly after planning their life together were surprised with the news of beautiful 5th daughter, Laura. Lee, Arlene and Laura traveled around the world, living in many places including Berlin, Germany when the Berlin Wall fell. Lee was fortunate in being able to switch to Delta before Pan Am went out of business and flew for Delta for 10 years. They settled in Georgia and stayed there to raise Laura. Lee was delighted when Laura attended University of Georgia, mainly because of their football team whose games Lee always looked forward to.

After Arlene’s passing, Lee moved to Huntersville, NC to be closer to Laura and her husband, Joe, especially in support of their new family with the welcoming of two children and to grow close to his new grandchildren. Lee joined Bethel Church in Huntersville where he felt very supported and greatly enjoyed the sermons, whether in person or online. Through his career and vacations, Lee traveled all over the world and at the age of 83, had one more item to check off his bucket list, stepping foot on the only continent he hadn’t yet, Antarctica. He and his daughter, Victoria, traveled to Argentina and then sailed the seas to Antarctica, where they walked amongst the penguins and delighted in the icy sights.

During the pandemic and through health challenges and treatments, his daughter Andrea came to live with him. Lee called Andrea his guardian angel and she provided him with the best quality of life possible until his last breath.

Leland was an incredible husband to Arlene, as well as a dedicated and loving father and grandfather. He took great pride in his Norwegian heritage, holding a deep appreciation for such on behalf of his beloved mother who traced the family back to the day of the first Nordic King Harold. He also sought to walk in his father, Colonel Jordan Larson's, footsteps in aviation carrying on his honorable legacy in flying for the USAF. He enjoyed catching up with pals, visiting family and discussing politics. He was a true gentleman, generous, forgiving and fiercely patriotic. He loved his conservative news, had a baseball cap to represent all his interests, loathed robo-callers and, overall, had the most positive outlook on life. He continually wished for all of his family to be healthy and happy and he dreamed that in his children’s lifetime there would be established congressional term limits. Lee will be deeply missed by all of those who knew him and his daughters will always remain full of gratitude, respect, love and great pride for their father.

Blue Skies and Tailwinds to Leland forever.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Arlene Wood Larson, parents, his siblings Jordan Larson Jr, Jeanne Greiwe, Marilyn Mau and many friends. Left to cherish his memory are daughters Victoria Twisdale and husband Pete, Jennifer Young and husband Bud, Kristen Larson, Andrea Sessa, Laura Galloway and husband Joseph, stepson Gregory Hankinson; grandchildren, Jacquelyn, Alexandra, Preston, Nicholas, Kevin and Julie; great granddaughter Alannah.
