Obituary : William Aloysius Meagher Jr.
Mr. William A. Meagher, Jr., 83, of Newnan,
Georgia, formerly of Lafayette, Louisiana, passed away Thursday, November 2,
2023, after a very brave fight with leukemia.
He was born August 9, 1940, in Houma,
Louisiana, to the late Elsie Loper Meagher and William A. Meagher, Sr. In
addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son, William A.
Meagher, III, and his brother, James Stephen Meagher. Bill is survived by his
beloved wife of 57 years, Barbara Gremillion Meagher; daughter Chalin Meagher
Anton and son-in-law Freddy Anton; granddaughters Madeleine and Molly Anton;
sister Margaret McInteer & husband Pat, brother Mike Meagher & wife
Camille, brother Pat Meagher; sister-in-law Jeanette Wadsworth and husband
David, and more than twenty cherished nieces and nephews.
Bill graduated from St. John's High School
in Shreveport, Louisiana. He was a proud 1963 graduate of the University of
Louisiana at Lafayette, where he was a member of the men's gymnastics team and
Sigma Nu Fraternity. After college, he joined the U.S. Air Force and, after
completing flight training, became a pilot, serving as a captain in Vietnam and
the United Kingdom. While still in the service, Bill met the love of his life,
Barbara. They were married in 1966, and soon after started a family. He was a wonderful
father to his son, Bill, and daughter, Chalin. After leaving the Air Force in
1969, he flew for Delta Airlines until retiring in 1999.
Bill and Barbara loved to travel - seeing
sights and visiting family and friends around the world.
Also, Bill had a passion for golf and was a
scratch golfer, winning the 2019 PGA National Senior Scramble with his partner,
John. Additionally, he was an adventurous hunter, avid fisherman, self-taught
shrimper, NCAA division one gymnast, fighter pilot, war veteran, and excellent
joke teller. While Bill was known by various nicknames, including Cotton,
Billy, and Gump, by far his favorite was his grandpa name that many besides his
granddaughters adopted: Bobo.
A funeral mass for Bill will be Thursday,
November 9, 2023, at 10:30 a.m., at St. George Catholic Church, 771 Roscoe
Road, Newnan. Burial will follow at Forest Lawn Memorial Park. In lieu of
flowers, the family requests memorial contributions to the Leukemia &
Lymphoma Society.
