Louis Pierce Jr. obituary
Louis Theodore Pierce Jr., 79, passed away
surrounded by family in Newnan, GA on July 5, 2024 after a two year long battle
with blood cancer. He was born on July 24, 1944 in Metairie, LA to his mother,
Margaret Elizabeth Timms and Louis Theodore Pierce Sr. Lou spent his childhood
in Metairie, attending St. Catherine's Elementary before going away to St. Ben
Seminary for the first two years of high school. He graduated from Holy Cross
High School in 1962 and enrolled at LSU.
During his time at LSU, Lou joined the Marine
Corps PLCA in 1964. Upon his college graduation in 1966, he was commissioned
2nd Lieutenant US Marine and began to fulfill his lifelong dream: becoming a
pilot. In early 1968 he fought for his country in the Vietnam War as a
helicopter pilot, earning a purple heart and an Air Medal (Bronze Star for the
First Award) in November of 1968 for his service. Lou then finished out his
career in the Marines as a flight instructor in Pensacola, FL from 1969-1972.
In 1973 Lou achieved his ultimate goal of becoming
a pilot for Delta Airlines. During his 31 years as a Delta pilot, he flew the
B727, DC-8, L1011, B757, the 767, and retired on the 767-400 at age 60 in July
of 2004. He loved his career and every minute that he was flying. Although his
family and flying were his top priorities in life, Lou also had a passion for
reading, being in nature, gardening, and volunteering for the Meals on Wheels
program in Newnan. He also had a particular soft spot for all animals, and his
family frequently referred to him as St. Francis because of his proclivity for
saving/rescuing all animals, including even spiders (to the chagrin of his
daughter Rachel) and snakes (to the chagrin of his wife). That same compassion
extended into every aspect of his life. He always found a way to help family,
friends, neighbors, or total strangers in need and never backed down from
finding solutions to any problems his loved ones faced.
Lou is survived by his beloved wife, Denise Songy
Pierce, his five children, Louis Pierce III (Kristin), Lorrie Pierce Marro
(Danny), Arthur Pierce (Laura), Matthew Pierce, and Rachel Pierce Benson
(Caleb), his grandchildren, Ian Pierce, Gavin Pierce, Daniel Marro, Paige Marro
Riggsbee, Logan Marro, Teah Amato, Grant Pierce, and Ella Pierce, and his
siblings, Dolores Pierce Thompson and Robert Pierce. He is also fondly
remembered by his many nieces, nephews, friends, and other extended family.
A visitation will be held on July 12, 2024 at St.
Joseph Abbey in St. Benedict, LA at 1:00 pm, followed by a mass of Christian
burial at 2:00 pm with interment to follow in the abbey cemetery.
In lieu of flowers we kindly ask that you donate
to Meals on Wheels of Coweta in honor of Lou's commitment to the organization.
