Michael Duke Ethridge, age 67, passed away
suddenly and unexpectedly on June 18, 2026.
Born on
January 10, 1959, in Brandon, Mississippi, Mike called both Mississippi and
Alaska home while growing up. After graduating from Kenai Central High School
in Alaska, he served a full-time Spanish-speaking mission for The Church of
Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the Texas El Paso Mission.
Mike
attended Brigham Young University, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in
Political Science and International Relations. While attending college, he
joined the U.S. Air Force ROTC program and later completed Advanced Leadership
Training at the Air Command and Staff College. He also completed Squadron
Officer School, where he was recognized as a Distinguished Graduate.
It was
during his college years that he met the love of his life, JoAnn
"JoJo" Garff. Mike and Jo were married in Salt Lake City, Utah, in
1982 and shared 44 wonderful years of marriage. During that time, they traveled
the world together and most recently enjoyed spending time in Florida.
Mike
proudly served his country for more than 20 years, flying with the U.S. Air
Force, the U.S. Air National Guard, and the U.S. Air Force Reserve. His
assignments included serving as a T-38 flight instructor, flying the KC-10 and
KC-135, and working as a U.S. Air Force Academy Liaison Officer. Throughout his
military career, he flew in numerous operations, including Operations El Dorado
Canyon, Desert Shield, and Desert Storm, along with other missions best
remembered by his fellow Gucci brothers and sisters. He retired with the rank
of Lieutenant Colonel.
Mike
began his distinguished commercial aviation career with Delta Air Lines in
August 1991. Over more than three decades, he served in a variety of roles
across multiple fleets, including the Boeing 727, Lockheed L-1011, Boeing 737,
Airbus A320, MD-88, Boeing 757/767, and Boeing 767-400. In addition to his
flying assignments, Mike made significant contributions as a Line Check Pilot,
an instructor on several aircraft, and in a leadership role within the Salt
Lake City Chief Pilot's Office.
Mike
loved flying. But even more than flying, he loved his family and friends. He
was a marvelous storyteller, a devoted husband, an extraordinary father and
grandfather, and the rock of his family. For more than a decade, Mike and Jo
shared a passion for cycling. Whether in Utah or Florida, they logged countless
miles together, always with their little dog along for the adventure. He was
unapologetically himself. Everyone thought Mike was their best friend because
he had a remarkable gift for making each person feel seen, valued, and loved. When
Mike asked, "What can I do for you?" he truly meant it—and then he
did it.
Mike was
Jo's everything—her best friend, the love of her life, and her greatest source
of strength. Together they built a beautiful life and raised four children:
Adam, Kristen (Patrick Bardsley), Steven, and Megan. He also leaves behind four
incredible grandchildren: Madelyn, Owen, Charlotte, and Callum. Mike and Jo
lost their son Steven sixteen years ago — a grief that never fully leaves. Now,
in the wake of Mike's sudden passing, the family sought answers through a
private autopsy. None were found. He had the healthy heart of a 35-year-old
athlete. The absence of an explanation, as with Steven before him, is its own
loss — and one the family will carry with grace and sorrow.
Mike
lived his life in service to his family and friends, offering guidance on
matters both trivial and profound. His happiest moments were spent traveling,
teaching, coaching, biking, relaxing on the beach, and sharing the simple,
everyday moments of life, as long as he was with the people he loved. Mike will
be deeply missed and was taken from us far too soon. His beloved "Big
Papi" hugs will be cherished forever.
A
Celebration of Life will be held on Wednesday, July 8. Casual attire is
welcome. Please bring your stories and join us as we celebrate this
larger-than-life, honorable man whose life touched so many.
