Gerald D. Belford, age 79 of Phoenix, Arizona, departed to be face to face with the Lord Jesus Christ on December 7, 2012 after living a full life of faith, courage and perseverance. Gerald was born in Clay Center, NE on October 26, 1933. He had a distinguished military career as an Air Force pilot and served his country in the Korean War. After his military service, he had a long, successful career as a commercial airline Captain and flight instructor. He retired from Northwest Airlines in 1992. Gerald is survived by his wife Kathleen Marie Belford, children Donovan Belford, Julie Belford-Caruso, Michael Lethem, Jeffrey Belford, 10 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his daughter Lori Ann Lethem (1982). Funeral services will be held on Saturday, December 15, 2012 at 12:00 p.m. at West Resthaven Funeral Home, 6450 W Northern Ave, Glendale, AZ 85301. Word has been received of the passing of retired NWA pilot Captain Gerald Dean Belford, age 79. I believe Captain Belford hired on

10-18-1959 and rode out the many mergers with West Coast, AirWest, Hughes Air West, and Republic Airlines prior to his retirement.

Louis Garrett Whitten was born on April 12, 1919 and passed from this world to the next on Dec. 1, 2012 at the age of 93.

He was a native Texan, raised in Paris, Texas. He joined the Army, and then became a pilot in the Air Corps during WWII. Louis went on to become a pilot for Delta Airlines, a position he proudly held for many, many years. He traveled all over the world doing something he really loved. He was a hard worker, but taking care of his family was always his biggest concern.

He was quick with a one-liner, even in old age. He enjoyed watching birds with his daughter and telling stories about his colorful past. He was smart, funny, and had a heart as big as Texas for his family.

He is survived by his daughter, Elizabeth Whitten, and granddaughter, Lori Kluth and her husband, Clay. Also survived by sister, Lou, and brother, Frank.

Cyrus John Cole, 97, of Silverdale, WA, passed away on Monday, December 2, 2012. Cyrus was born in Cataldo, ID on December 27, 1914, a son to Astoria and Arthur Cole.

On March 11, 1940, Cryus and Viola Penhallick married and lived in Spokane, WA where their three children were born: Billy, Charyl, and Charlene. The family moved to Seattle in 1950 and built a home in Normandy Park. In 1968, Cy married Helen Collier and together lived in the house in Normandy Park until 2005 when they moved to Silverdale.

Cy started his flying career as a flight instructor at Felts Field in Spokane. He was later hired as a pilot by Northwest Airlines in 1944. Cy flew everything from DC-3’s to 747’s and retired in 1974. He was a member of the Quiet Birdmen Association, the Lunch Bunch, and the RNPA.

He is predeceased by two brothers and one sister, and his son, Billy. He is survived by his wife, Helen; his children, Charyl (Leland), Charlene, a daughter in law, Judy Cole, 9 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.

He has “Gone West” now and will be dearly missed but remembered as a person whose door was always open to family and friends. Oh Dad, you will be dearly missed. May you rest in eternal peace.

A memorial service will be held on Monday, December 17, 2012, 11:00 AM at Bonney-Watson; Washington Memorial Park, 16445 International Blvd. SeaTac, WA. In lieu of flowers, please make a contribution to your favorite charity.

Word has been received of the passing of early NWA pilot and RNPA member Captain Cyrus J. ‘Cy’ Cole. Born/raised I believe in Idaho, Cyrus J. Cole was near 98 years of age at the time of his passing on December 2nd. Captain Cole hired on with NWA 07-01-1944 and retired at the mandatory age 60 in 1974. Although not yet posted on their site, we understand that arrangements have been entrusted to the Bonney-Watson funeral home in Washington.   bonneywatson.com/      Captain Cole was preceded in death by his son in 2006, who was also a NWA pilot, Captain Billy J. Cole (Nov 7, 1941 – Mar 16, 2006).

Word has been received of the passing of retired DL pilot and Delta Golden Wings member Captain C. R. ‘Bob’ Dodaro. Born/raised I believe in the Chicago area, Carmen Robert Dodaro was 79 years of age at the time of his passing due to complications with colon cancer. Captain Dodaro hired on with Delta 07-25-1960 and retired at the mandatory age 60 in 1993. Captain Dodaro was based ORD, later and at the time of his retirement he was based ATL. He is survived by his wife of 31 years Barbara ‘Barbie’ Campbell Dodaro. The funeral home does not yet have Captain Dodaro’s obituary posted, but I called them and the information should be posted soon. DODARO, Carmen "Bob" 79, passed gently into Gods loving arms Dec. 2, 2012, finalizing the last chapter of a wonderful love story of 37 years with his partner, wife, and best friend, Barbara Campbell Dodaro. Bob surrounded by his loved ones, passed away peacefully at home, under the care of Hospice, after a long, strong battle with colon cancer. He was blessed with a loving and faithful daughter, Monique Dodaro Butterfield and her husband, John Butterfield whom he thought of as his son, of Crystal Lake, IL. He took great pride in his adoring grandchildren, Kate Allen (Rob), Meghan, Amy and Gretchen Butterfield, all of Crystal Lake, IL, Danielle Dodaro of Baltimore, MD; his two special nieces, Ashlee and Casey Campbell of Ocean Springs, MS.; brother-in-law, Steve Campbell of Ocean Springs, MS and mother-in-law and father-in-law, Earlene and Leon Campbell of Jackson, MS. He leaves behind many wonderful friends, caring neighbors, and the special love of his two golden retrievers, Rover and Buffy. Bob was an only child born in 1933 in Rockford, IL and predeceased by his parents, Peter and Vera Dodaro of Rockford, IL. He graduated from Northern University and was especially proud to be a member of the United States Marine Corp. and lived by the motto Siemper Fi. He loved his job of 33 years as an airline pilot for Delta Airlines from 1960 to 1993 when he retired and pursued his love of the water, sailing and fishing, motorcycling, golfing and traveling. He is a member of St. Brendan's Catholic Church, St. Brendan's Navigators, Island Estates Men's Stag Luncheon Club, VFW, American Italian Club and the Airline Pilots Association for many years. Bob is also survived by many friends and family members. Wake will be held Dec. 6, from 5:30-7:30 pm at Moss Feaster Funeral Home, 693 S. Belcher Road, Clearwater, and funeral services will be held at 11 am, Friday Dec. 7 at St. Brendan's Church on Island Estates in Clearwater. Contributions can be made in his name to Suncoast Hospice. Lorn Stanley Bortnem,70, of Denton, Texas, went to be with the Lord on November 30, 2012, with family by his side.

Lorn was born on June 15, 1942 in Brookings, South Dakota to the late Lawrence and Stella Bortnem. He grew up in Brookings and attended South Dakota State University where he graduated in 1964. He attended Air Force pilot training as a Second Lieutenant at Vance AFB and flew the KC-135 in Southeast Asia during the Vietnam War. While flying for the Air Force, he met his future bride, Judith Ann Zentner in Merced, California. They were married on March 8, 1966.

Following an honorable discharge from the Air Force in 1970, Lorn was employed by Delta Airlines as a pilot for 31 years, retiring in 2002 as a Captian on the Boeing 767.

Lorn enjoyed spending his time playing golf, woodworking, cooking, and volunteering at Our Daily Bread Soup Kitchen and the Denton Jazz Festival. He also enjoyed spending time with family and traveling with friends.

Lorn is survived by his wife of 47 years, Judy Bortnem; his son and daughter-in-law, David and Johanna Bortnem of Allen, Texas; son and daughter-in-law, Rick and Jeannette Bortnem of Corinth, Texas; grandchildren, Ashley, Haley, Kasey, and Cade Bortnem; sisters, Carol Korman of Louisville, Kentucky and Marlys Bakken of Minneapolis, Minnesota.

A memorial service will be held on Monday, December 3, 4:00 p.m., at Lake Sharon Community Church, 2650 Oakmont Dr, Corinth, Texas.

Retired 767ER Captain Lorn Bortnem passed away on Friday 30 November after a battle with liver cancer. Lorn was born in Brookings, South Dakota. He attended South Dakota State University and was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in the USAF upon graduation. He attended USAF pilot training at Vance AFB in Enid, Oklahoma. Upon completion of his training at Vance he went on to KC-135 training at Castle AFB in Merced, California where he met his future bride, Judy Zentner. Lorn and Judy were married in March of 1966. Lorn flew the KC-135R out of McCoy AFB in Orlando, Florida as well as Arc Light and Young Tiger missions in Southeast Asia. After his Air Force tour of duty he was hired by Delta Air Lines in July of 1970. During his 31 year career he flew out of the Miami, Dallas/FortWorth and Kennedy bases. Lorn and Judy were longtime residents of Denton, Texa and have two sons David (Johanna) and Rick (Jeanette) and four grandchildren. A memorial service for Lorn will be held at the Lake Sharon Community Church in Corinth, Texas on Monday 3 December a 4:00 PM. Lorn and Judy's home address is 36 Wellington Oaks Circle.
