NOEL SMITH (1931 - 2015)

Noel Lester Smith On Saturday, October 17, 2015, Captain Noel Lester Smith, 84, went to be with his beloved "Petie" after a 15-year battle with prostate cancer. Noel was born July 19, 1931 in Madison, WI to Genevieve and Charles L. "Les" Smith. Les and his twin brother Lee and older brother Chad were among the first 12 pilots hired by Northwest Airlines (NWA). In his youth in Minneapolis Noel was an acclaimed junior horseman. He earned a degree in animal husbandry and agriculture from the University of Minnesota, and became a Navy carrier pilot. He was stationed with the U.S. Sixth Fleet in Naples, and made 128 carrier landings flying the Douglas AD-5 Skyraider. In 1955 Noel was coming home on leave when he met Phyllis Joan "Petie" Peters, who was a NWA stewardess on the flight. Lt. Junior Grade Noel L. Smith and Petie married in 1956, and their first residence was in Northfield, NJ. They moved to Minneapolis in 1957 and Noel became a pilot for Northwest Airlines. During his 30 years with the airline, they also lived in Rosemount, MN, and Honolulu, HI before transferring to the Seattle, WA area in 1972, and eventually retiring in Clyde Hill, WA. Noel and Petie were married for 55 years until her death in 2012. Together they raised five children. Their beloved middle child, Cathy, died in 2007. Noel is survived by four remaining children, Angela (Oscar) Moretti of St. Louis, MO, Michael B. (Christie) Smith of Tacoma, WA, Patricia Doyle (Greg Walan) of North Aurora, IL, and Stone (Samantha) Smith of Bothell, WA. In addition, he is survived by 10 grandchildren, Laura (Grant) Challen, Adrian Moretti, Alison and Adam Smith, Kim Hollins, Erin and Tom Doyle, and Benjamin, Zachary and Samuel Smith, and two great-grandsons, Matthew and Michael Challen. Additional survivors include his younger brother Robert (Diane) Smith of Midway, UT and Scottsdale, AZ. niece Sheryl (John) LaFalce of Golden, CO, and nephew David Smith of Houston, TX. A private funeral service is being planned for summer 2016 at St. Charles parish in Tacoma, WA that will be followed by a ceremony and inurnment of Noel and Petie's ashes at Tahoma National Cemetery.

Notification with the passing of RNPA member retired NWA pilot Captain Noel L. Smith, age 84.  Captain Smith joined Northwest Airlines 08-07-1957 and retired with Northwest in 1987.  He was widowed in February of 2012 with the death of his wife former NWA stewardess Phyllis Joan 'Petie' neé Peters Smith ...... Petie's obituary appears below.  Captain Smith had most recently resided at 7290 Rosemount Circle in Tacoma, Washington.

NWA Captain Noel Smith, age 84 of Tacoma, Washington, passed away on October 17, 2015. Noel retired as a 747 captain on July 31, 1987. Noel was the son of Les Smith, of the legendary Smith twins of NWA fame. He was preceded in death by his wife and a daughter. A memorial service will be held next summer.

  Phyllis Joan (Petie) Smith (nee Peters), passed away suddenly and unexpectedly in Naples, FL on February 13th, 2012 while vacationing with her husband. Phyllis is survived by her loving husband of 55 years, Noel L. Smith of Clyde Hill and 4 remaining children: Angela (Oscar) Moretti of Houston, TX; Michael B. (Christie) of Tacoma, WA; Patricia J. Doyle of Chicago, IL; and Stone (Samantha) Smith of Bothell, WA. In addition she is survived by 10 grandchildren: Laura (Grant) Challen, Adrian Moretti, Alison and Adam Smith, Kim Hollins, Erin and Tom Doyle, and Benjamin, Zachary and Samuel Smith - and one great grandson, Matthew Challen who was born on her 82nd birthday. Additional survivors include her older brother Warren Peters of Superior WI, brother-in-law Robert (Diane) Smith of Henderson, NV, nephew Kevin Christian (Nancy Love) of Des Moines, WA, Joannie (Gil) Lyons of Redmond, WA and many other beloved nieces and nephews. Petie is preceded in death by her parents and 3 older siblings: Sylvester, Lloyd and Esther as well as her beloved daughter Catherine Ann Smith.

   Petie was born on April 28, 1929, in St. Cloud, MN. Petie was the youngest of 5 children born to Hubert & Abbie Peters (Wocken). She was a graduate of Cathedral High School in St. Cloud. Petie was 1 of 5 women among the 115 graduates receiving their B.S. in Business Administration from Marquette University in 1951 (Milwaukee, WI).

   As a 'stewardess' with Northwest Airlines, Petie met a passenger who became the love of her life and from whom she was inseparable the rest of her days, Lt. Junior Grade Noel L. Smith. Noel and Petie married in 1956 and their 1st residence was in Northfield N.J. where Noel was stationed as a Navy carrier pilot.

   They moved to Minneapolis in 1957 and Noel became a pilot for Northwest Airlines. During his 30 years with the airline, they also lived in Rosemount, MN, and Honolulu, HI before transferring to the Seattle, WA area in 1972, and eventually retiring in Clyde Hill, WA.

   In addition to being a wonderful wife, homemaker and mother, Petie was giving of her time and talents to her community. She has been an active supporter of Sacred Heart Church, the Overlake Hospital Foundation, and a long time active member of the Overlake Country Club ladies' division. Petie was a member of the Cancer Auxiliary at Overlake Hospital and was an active walker in the Walk for Life program at Bellevue Square. She was also a lifetime member of Marquette University's President's Club and the Evans Scholars Par Club. She also belonged to the Children's Hospital Circle of Care, the Marquette Alumni Club of Western, WA, and the Northwest Airlines Retired Airline Pilots Association.

 Visitation will take place at Sunset Hills Funeral Home, 1215 145th PL SE, Bellevue, WA, on Friday, February 17, 2012 from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00pm. The funeral mass will take place Saturday, February 18, 2012, 11:00 a.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Clyde Hill. Online sentiments may be journaled at www.sunsethillsfuneralhome.com. Notification with the passing of Delta pilot William H. Cleino, age 66.  Bill joined Delta Air Lines 07-24-1997 and I believe he retired in 2009.  His obituary indicates services to be held this Saturday the 31st in Alabama.

William "Bill" Henry Cleino, age 66, died at Stringfellow Memorial Hospital in Anniston, Ala. on October 23, 2015. A memorial service will be held at the Episcopal Church of the Messiah in Heflin, Ala. on Saturday, October 31, 2015 at 11 a.m., with The Rev. John Bagby officiating. Visitation will be held in the parish hall of the church one hour prior to service. Interment will follow at the Cleburne Memorial Garden in Ranburne, Ala. with military honors.
Bill was preceded in death by his father, Dr. Edward Henry Cleino.
He is survived by the love of his life and wife of 14 years, Martha Sherrell Cleino; his mother, Dr. Elizabeth Cleino; sisters, Dr. Anne Witt, Beth Allaway, Jeanne Perkins (Jerry) and Barbara Cleino; daughters, Carolyn Ezell (Justin), Christine Cannon (Dennis) and Rebecca Hogue (Robert); seven nieces and nephews; grandchildren, Brandon and Charlotte Ezell, Colton and Cody Cannon and Tyler and Kaytlin Hogue; and special friends, Cathy Beasley, Michael Spalding and The Rev. Hoyt Winslett.
Bill was born in Nashville, Tennessee, grew up in Tuscaloosa, Ala. and graduated from Tuscaloosa High School. In 1972, he graduated from the University of Alabama with a Bachelor of Science degree in Metallurgical Engineering. He enjoyed being a member of Theta Tau, Engineering Fraternity and ROTC.
He worked in various positions as a metallurgist for about 12 years. During that period, he was married to Irene Stanton and they raised their three daughters in Anniston and Trussville. Bill began his second career in 1986 as a commercial pilot with Eastern Airlines then with Kiwi International and finally retired at Delta Airlines after 20 years of flying both domestic and international routes.
Bill joined the Air National Guard of Alabama in 1972. He served with the 106th Tactical Reconnaissance Squadron located in Birmingham. After 2 years as a Navigator, he completed training as an RF-4C pilot. He also graduated from Squadron Officers School, and Air Command and Staff College and received many honors. He honorably served his country for over 22 years as an F-4 fighter pilot, flying more than 2000 hours and retiring in 1994 as a Command Pilot with the rank of Lt. Colonel.
Bill was always a contributing member of society. He completed a Master's degree in Secondary Education in Mathematics at The University of Montevallo in 1992 then taught mathematics at Tarrant Middle School and Heflin High School. He also taught mathematics and electronics (robotics) at Gadsden State Community College. He served as Chairman of the Cleburne County Hospital Board.
 A lifelong Episcopalian, Bill supported the church wherever he lived, often serving on the Vestry. He was an active member of the Cursillo movement.
Bill's interests included hunting, playing golf, flying engineless glider planes, playing the guitar and traveling with the Corvette Club. He was an avid history scholar, a member of the R.E. Rodes Camp of the Sons of Confederate Veterans and was presented the Meritorious Service Award by the W.M. Forney Chapter UDC.
He and Sherrell have enjoyed their new Retirement Home at The Villages in Florida. Bill constantly provided love and support to his family and friends and was a shining example of a great friend, mentor, teacher, husband, son, brother, father and grandfather. Bill lived life to the fullest every day.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that contributions be made to the Church of the Messiah, 836 Lakeview Drive, Heflin, AL, 36264.

Navy veteran, NWA Capt. John Adrian Nevelle Jr.

April 20, 1938 ~ October 22, 2015

 

Word has been received with the passing of RNPA member retired NWA pilot Captain John Nevelle, age 77.  Captain Nevelle joined Northwest Airlines 04-08-1968 and retired with Northwest in 1998.

Obituary.............................

John passed away peacefully with his sons by his side on Thursday, October 22nd, 2015. He was 77. John was born on April 20th, 1938 in Beloit, Wisconsin and grew up in South Bend, Indiana where he went to Riley High School. He attended Florida State University on a football scholarship and then finished his college education at Minnesota State University, Mankato. He served our country as a U.S. Navy Aviator from 1961 to 1968 where he was based in Patuxent River, Maryland. John flew missions in Vietnam and the blockade of Cuba. In April of 1968, John went to work for Northwest Airlines as a Commercial Pilot where he retired in April of 1998 as a 747 Captain.

 

In January of 1966, John married Charlene Lewis. Together they had 2 sons and lived most of their years as a family in Bellevue, Washington. In John's later years, he spent time living in Hawaii, Indiana & Arizona where he retired. John moved back to Bellevue in 2011 to be closer to his sons.

 

John was a very generous man. He was always providing for anyone in need. As a teenager, he spent much time caring for his brothers and sisters. He was as honest as they come, and always left an impression on anyone he met. Dogs loved him and would always put a smile on his face. He loved playing golf and football. At Riley High School he became one of the first football players to make the All State Indiana Team. As a parent, he especially loved watching and coaching his 2 sons who both attended Eastside Catholic High School. He loved his Dallas Cowboys and was always looking to make a bet. John was always up for a good time, even in his later years. John took great pride in being an exceptional Pilot. He wanted to be remembered as a great father and someone who was tough. He wanted his sons to be proud of him.

 

John was preceded in death by his parents John (JACK) Adrian Nevelle & Agnes (MEMO) Louise Nevelle, as well as his twin brother, Patrick Nevelle, who died at birth. John is survived by his 2 sons John (Kim) Nevelle & Dirk (Michelle) Nevelle; his grandchildren Connor, Adrian, Hope & Noah Nevelle; his 5 siblings Yvonne (Bob) Kenny, Carole (Steve) Pinter, Glenn (Nancy) Nevelle, Frank (Rosie) Nevelle & Tim Nevelle.

 

At John's request there will be no services. A private family memorial/celebration of his life will be held at a later date.

I have received word that NWA captain John Nevelle passed away peacefully with his sons by his side on Thursday October 22. John was originally from South Bend, Indiana, he attended Florida State on a football scholarship before entering flight training in the U.S. Navy. He served in the Navy for seven years before employment with NWA. John was hired by NWA on April 04, 1968 and retired a 747 captain on April 20, 1998.

At John’s request there will be no services. A private family memorial/celebration of his life will be held at a later date.

WA/DL Capt. Robert Schmid Jr.

Korean war veteran, WA/DL Capt. Robert 'Bob' Schmid Jr.

October 10, 1930 ~ October 13, 2015

 

 

We received notice of Capt. Schmid's passing last week but only just learned of services last evening.  Captain Schmid was 85 years of age at the time of his passing.  Bob hired on with Western Airlines 06-10-1957 and retired with Delta Air Lines in 1990, based SFO and LAX.  He is survived by his wife Elizabeth 'Betty' and their children.  Services for Captain Schmid were held today in Jackson, Wyoming.

Robert Schmid, Jr. was born on October 10, 1930 and passed away on October 13, 2015 at the age of 85. "Bob" as he was known by family and friends was a resident of Thayne, Wyoming. He is survived by Elizabeth (Betty) Ann Schmid, his wife of 58 years.  He is also survived by three daughters: Lisa Cornelius and her husband, Ralph, of Corvallis, Oregon, Karen Schmid of San Francisco, California and Gretchen Schmid of Jackson, Wyoming, and three grandchildren Randy, Katie & Rhys.  Bob is also survived by two younger brothers, William Schmid and Otto Schmid, both of Minnesota and his beloved dog, Runner.
Born in New York, New York, Bob grew up in Minneapolis, Minnesota with his parents, Daisy and Robert Schmid, Sr.  Bob completed his US Naval Cadet training in 1952, received his wings and then served in the United States Marine Corps (1952-1956) as a fighter pilot in the Korean War and then in the Marine Corp Reserves (1956-1964).  After the military, he became a commercial pilot with Western Airlines for nearly thirty years, and then flew for Delta for another three.  Bob was proud to fly as captain for 23 years of his long commercial airline career, something he had dreamed about since he was seven years old.  
Bob was an avid outdoorsman. He loved to hunt, fly fish and ski. Bob met his wife, Betty, skiing in Alta, Utah in 1956. Bob and Betty spent their most recent time enjoying the clean air and beautiful scenery of mountain living in Wyoming.
