Navy veteran, WA/DL Capt. Charles A. Sherman Jr.

July 24, 1942 ~ October 12, 2022

 

From friends and colleagues we learn of the passing of retired Western/Delta pilot Captain Charlie Sherman, age 80.  Charlie covered a lot of ground and worked many jobs as he worked his way towards Captain….A/C mech USN, Alaska Railroad warehouse laborer, hired by NWA in 1963 R&E mech/lead cleaner, radioman for Flying Tigers in 1967 & Maint., worked for Prudhoe Bay Oil Dist., moved to California in 1971 and hired on with Western Airlines 04-21-1971 as a ramper at LAX, then mech 1972 and was a pilot for Western by 07-12-1976, flew B-737, 727, 757, 767, L-1011, and retired with Delta Air Lines July 2002. Whew!!  Charlie did it all!

Obituary : Charles A. Sherman

 

Charlie passed away Oct. 12, 2022, at the age of 80 in Surprise, Arizona.

 

He was born to Charles Sherman Sr. and Pauline Finn in Weymouth, Mass., on July 24, 1942.

 

Charlie was a Navy veteran, airplane mechanic, and a captain for western and Delta Airlines. He retired from Delta in 2002 on the Boeing 767ER.

 

Charlie was honored by the FAA in his hangar in Lincoln, Montana, and received the Wright Brothers Master Pilot awarded for holding a pilot certificate for 50 years.

 

Charlie was an active member of Alcoholics Anonymous for 40 years. He had a unique gift to help other people get and stay sober.

 

He is survived by sister Karol and Eric Weatherby and sister-in-law Kathy Lewis, and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, son Mike, and brother Kirk.

 

The Charlie Sherman Museum, Hangar 14, at the Lincoln Airport, is filled with his collection of pictures and airline memorabilia from his long flying career. The hanger is available to be shown by appointment with Bob and Karen Frank-Plumlee.

 

A service will be held at the old Lincoln cemetery in Lincoln, Mont. at a later date.

NWA Capt. Robert Kunold

December 7, 1937  -  November 11, 2022

 

From the retired Northwest Airlines pilot group, we learn of the passing of retired Northwest pilot Captain Robert Kunold, age 84.  Captain Kunold joined Northwest Airlines 02-28-1966.  Bob is survived by his wife Carol and by his children and their families.

Obituary :     Bob Kunold passed away on Veterans Day, 2022, aged 84. Although in the military only four years, they taught him to fly, which played a big role in his life. Bob was born and raised in Southern California, earned a Physics degree from Cal-Poly Pomona, and entered the military soon thereafter. About the same time he charmed his wife Carol, and they soon eloped in a marriage that lasted 61 years. Bob and Carol settled on Bainbridge Island in the mid-1960s, where they raised 5 children.

 

In the Navy, Bob flew the P2V-Neptune during the Vietnam War. Upon his departure from the Navy, Bob joined Northwest Airlines, initially flying Boeing 707s, 727s, and spent the bulk of his time flying 747s, retiring as Captain of the B747-400, after a 28-year career. Bob was an excellent pilot, known by his peers as a stellar airman and once safely landing a 727 in Billings, Montana after the plane suffered a catastrophic engine failure during take-off.

 

But Bob’s real focus was on his family. When not traveling for work, Bob enjoyed his kids’ sports, with numerous weekends at gymnastic and track meets, horse jumping competitions, tennis matches and Friday night football games -- he even coached a Little League baseball team one year, featuring his two sons on a team that struggled to win a single game.

 

In addition, boating was a central part of the Kunold family life. Starting with overnight trips to Blake Island on a small runabout, Bob graduated up in boats through the years: a 23’ Penn Yan into which he crammed Carol and all five kids for multi-week trips to British Columbia; a 40’ wooden cruiser which brought the family together a bit too much with varnishing and hull maintenance; a 42’ Uniflite that he and his oldest son Robert Jr. navigated on a ten-week journey through the Inside Passage to Glacier Bay; briefly a 48’ Tollycraft; and finally his dream boat: a 60’ Lien Hwa named “Final Approach” which he and Carol used to “head North” nearly every summer during his retirement.

 

Bob enjoyed good food, fine drink and funny jokes. The more of each the better. It was never wise to pull his finger. He was always the life of the party, with a twinkle in his eye, a drink in his hand, and a joke for every occasion. When asked how his kids are doing, his typical response was “They’re doing great, they’re all out of jail right now.” He even had a few unique skills – one he was most proud of was the ability to identify people from behind – the capstone evidence of this capability being the time he correctly identified William F. Buckley, Jr. walking ahead of him in an airport terminal.

 

Bob is survived by his wife Carol, five children (Christine Hansen (Paul); Robert Kunold, Jr. (Vicky); Mark Kunold (Lesley); Stephanie Kunold and Nikki Potts (Tim)), 17 grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, and a sister, Joni Bayler.

 

The funeral service will be held at St. Cecilia Catholic Church (Bainbridge Island) at 11:00 a.m. on November 21st . The family asks that memorial donations be sent to Wounded Warrior Project or Saint Cecilia Catholic School Patrons’ Endowment.

 

Arrangements are entrusted to the Cook Family Funeral Home of Bainbridge Island.

 

 

DL Capt. Albert Victor “AV” Harrison Jr.

Navy veteran, DL Capt. Albert Victor “AV” Harrison Jr.

July 16, 1932 – July 6, 2022

 

Please forgive belated notice…..word has reached us that retired Delta Air Lines pilot and Delta Golden Wings member Captain Albert V. Harrison, has passed.  AV was 89 and just shy of his 90^th birthday at the time of his passing.  Captain Harrison joined Delta Air Lines 01-02-1956 and retired with Delta in 1992, based Atlanta.

AV Harrison

July 16, 1932 – July 6, 2022

Obituary – AV Harrison, loving husband, father and grandfather, died July 6, 2022. He was preceded by his first wife, Elizabeth who passed May of 2014. He leaves behind Jacqulynne Harrison, his wife since October of 2015. In addition, his two children, Albert William Harrison of Fort Walton Beach, FL and Dena Hulec of Deland, FL as well as three grandsons, James, Zac and Nic.

AV joined the US Naval Air in Miami in 1949. He then became a Delta pilot and worked for Delta until 1992. Since his retirement he has enjoyed many forms of travel for example, traveling across country in his Blue Bird coach, motorcycling, antique vehicles and flying his own private plane. He was also an active member of the Quite Birdman #36375, Masons Grand Lodge of Florida, Mahi Shriners, and Moose Lodge of Royal Palm.

Since his marriage to Jacqulynne in 2015, he was no longer able to travel. They took this time to concentrate on making their home his sanctuary. They created a clearing in the back yard which became a sanctuary for birds. Added a pool where they entertained friends and family. Jacqulynne threw him several birthday parties in which many fellow friends and pilots attended. They were fortunate to have a loving, caring relationship in his later years.

AV expressed many times he did not want a funeral or celebration of life.  We are honoring this request in providing a short snippet of his life. We will always miss his quick-witted jokes, comments and his devilish smile that clued us he was up to something.  God Bless the passing of my Beloved Husband.

NWA/DL Capt. Robert Lee Lewis

February 15, 1954 - November 3, 2022

 

Notice of passing ….retired Northwest Airlines/Delta Air Lines pilot Captain Robert Lee Lewis, age 68, of Molalla, Oregon has passed having suffered a tragic ATV accident.  Bob joined Northwest Airlines 11-10-1989.  He is survived by his wife Gwen and by his children and their families.

Obituary : Lt. Colonel Robert Lee Lewis

The Family of Bob (Plug) Lewis, 68, is sad

to announce his passing from an ATV accident on November 3, 2022.

Bob was born to Ruth Morgan at Ft. Rucker's Army Base in Alabama. He

grew up mostly in Ashland, Oregon where he graduated from Ashland HS in

1973. He then attended Oregon State University where he graduated from

the Air Force ROTC program in 1977 earning a Bachelor of Science in

Business Administration. He went on to become a pilot in the USAF being

stationed in a number of places including: Reese AFB in Lubbock, TX,

Kadena AFB in Okinawa, Japan and Nellis AFB in Las Vegas, Nevada. He

finished his aviation career with the Oregon Air National Guard in the fond

company of his REDHAWK family.

Bob flew a number of aircraft throughout his 23 year career in the Airforce

and was an instructor pilot in many of them. He had distinguished honors in

the T-37, T-38, F-4, F-5, and the F-15 while in the USAF. He also spent 12

years of service in the Oregon National Guard flying the F-15 and retired in

August of 2000.

Bob flew for Northwest and Delta Airlines and received the Aerial

Achievement Medal for successful execution of Operation Enduring

Freedom and Iraqi Freedom missions, as well as our Nation's continuing

Global War on Terrorism. He retired from Delta in October of 2017.

Bob's main priority was his family. He was a loving husband, father, and

Papa. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, camping, boating, and especially flying

in his own RV9A. He is survived by his mother (Ruth), wife of 43 years

(Gwen), son/daughter-in-law, (Ben/Megan), daughter/son-in-law

(Mindy/Aaron), daughter/son-in-law (Ali/Jake), brother (Ron), five

grandchildren, as well as several nieces and nephews.

His legacy will forever live on in our hearts and the hearts of so many others

whom he had an impact on. Soar high in the sky until we meet again. All

our live.

A celebration of life will be held in St. James Catholic Church in Molalla,

OR. It will take place on Veteran's day - November 11, 2022 at 10:00am.

The burial will be at Willamette National Cemetery on November 12, 2022 at

8:00am. Donations can be made in his name to the David Heller Foundation

or the American Cancer Society.

 

DL Capt. William McCoy Odom

November 27, 1952 ~ November 6, 2022

 

We have just received word that retired Delta pilot Captain William M. Odom, nearing his 70^th birthday, has passed.  Captain Odom joined Delta Air Lines 11-21-1980.  He is survived by his wife Rosangela Carlin Odom, and by his children and stepchildren and their families.

Obituary : William McCoy Odom, 69, passed away peacefully with his family by his side in Newnan, GA on November 6, 2022, after a yearlong battle with cancer. He was born on November 27, 1952 in Mobile, AL to Marguerite McCoy Odom and James Thomas Odom.

Bill graduated from Auburn University in 1974 where he served as a War Eagle Plainsman, a member of Phi Kappa Tau fraternity and the ROTC.

After graduation, he was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in the United States Air Force where he spent six years on active duty. He attended flight school at Laughlin AFB in Del Rio, TX, graduating in 1975. He was then stationed at March AFB in Riverside, CA as a KC-135 pilot until 1979. Later, he moved on to Ellsworth AFB in Rapid City, SD to finish his military career. Bill was honorably discharged as a Captain in 1980 and began his career as a commercial pilot for Delta Airlines. He retired as a 777 Captain in 2017.

Bill loved Auburn, aviation, traveling, friends, and family, especially spending precious time with his grandchildren.

He is survived by his wife, Rosangela Carlin Odom; son, William McCoy Odom, Jr. (Nicole); daughter, Kelly Odom Fluharty (Thomas); Stepdaughters, Renata Marques Morrison (Dan) and Nathaly Marques Norman (Ryan); Granddaughters, Sloane Elise Odom, Parker McCoy Fluharty, Scout Kelsey Odom, Brett Hanley Fluharty and Olivia Marques Morrison and Grandson, Theo Marques Norman.

Bill is preceded in death by his parents, James and Marguerite Odom.

Service will be held on Monday, November 14, 2022 at 11:00 am at Mowell Funeral, 200 Robinson Road, Peachtree City, GA 30269. A Celebration of Life will follow at The Georgia Shrimp Company, 100 N Peachtree Parkway, Peachtree City, GA 30269.
