As noted in the January/February issue of the Air Line Pilot magazine’s In Memoriam page, we see the passing of PAA/DL Captain Thomas Joseph Stone, age 84.  Tom joined Pan American 08-14-1967 and retired with Delta Air Lines.  He is survived by many extended family members and friends.

Thomas J. Stone, 84 of Key Largo, FL and Carrollton IL passed away Thursday, December 14, 2023 at Jersey Community Hospital. He was born March 26, 1939 in Carrollton, the son of Leonard and Marie Kaiser Stone.  He is survived by several cousins and friends.

 

Tom served in the United States Navy as a pilot. He enjoyed traveling, his home in Key Largo, FL, and his service to the United States though his time flying for the Navy. He was a pilot for Pan Am for several years and loved traveling around the world.

 

Funeral mass was at St. John’s Catholic Church in Carrollton with burial in St. John’s Cemetery.  Memorials may be made to St. John’s Cafeteria Building Fund or Meals on Wheels. Hugh Edward Bearden III, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend, passed away peacefully on February 9, 2025, in Newnan, Georgia, at the age of 77……Hugh began his commercial flying career with Southern Airways 02-01-1978.

Hugh Edward Bearden III. Obituary

Hugh Edward Bearden III, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend, passed away peacefully on February 9, 2025, in Newnan, Georgia, at the age of 77. Born on February 3, 1948, in Maryville, Tennessee, Hugh lived a life full of adventure, dedication, and profound love for his family and friends.

 

Hugh’s professional journey as a pilot for Delta Air Lines allowed him to take to the skies, a fitting career for someone whose dreams always soared high. His service in the U.S. Army instilled in him a deep sense of duty and patriotism, values he carried with him throughout his life.

 

Hugh was married to his beloved wife, Donna, for 50 wonderful years. Their union was a testament to enduring love and partnership. Together, they created a family rooted in love and mutual respect. Hugh cherished every moment spent with his daughter Mandy Mann and her husband Trey, his son Hugh Bearden IV, and his precious grandchildren Macey, Aubrey, Emersyn, and Tinsley. Family was the cornerstone of Hugh’s life, and he relished every opportunity to create lasting memories with them.

 

As a brother, Hugh shared an unbreakable bond with his sister, Marty Taylor, who knew him not only as a sibling but as a lifelong friend. He was also a loving uncle to his nieces and nephews, extending his familial warmth to all those in his life.

 

Beyond his human family, Hugh had a special place in his heart for animals, especially his dogs. His beloved dog’s, Hawk, and Chancey, who preceded him in death, holds a cherished spot in his memory.

 

Hugh is preceded in death by his parents, Hugh and Margaret Bearden II, whose values and love he carried forward throughout his journey.

 

He leaves behind a legacy of love, integrity, and joy that will continue to inspire all who knew him. In addition to his immediate family, Hugh is survived by extended family and friends who will forever remember his warm smile, generous spirit, and the ways he brought people together.

 

In his passing, we are reminded of Hugh's incredible impact on the lives around him. Though he is no longer with us in body, his spirit will forever soar in our hearts, much like the skies he loved to traverse.

 

In lieu of flowers the family loving requests donations to the ASPCA in Hugh's name.

A memorial service will be held at 2:00 PM on Sunday, February 23, 2025, at the Chapel of Mowell Funeral Home, Peachtree City. The family will receive friends from 1:00 PM – 2:00 PM prior to the service at the funeral home.

NWA Capt. Dale Marshall Bosworth

Dale Bosworth Obituary

Dale Marshall Bosworth was born in Calipatria, California on April 27, 1940, to Edwin and Josephine Bosworth. He passed away January 19th, 2025, in Spokane Washington at 84 years of age. He is preceded by his parents Edwin and Josephine Bosworth, his brother Carl Bosworth, his sister Doris Fleming, son Ket Morris Courtney and daughter Loris Elizabeth Courtney.

 

Dale is survived by his wife, Nancy Morris Courtney Bosworth, his son Travis Bosworth, his two grandchildren, Kendra Courtney Ornellas and Tyler Bosworth, three great grandchildren, Courtney, Luke, and Trent Ornellas, and his sister Kathleen Sandy, along with numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews.

 

Awed by airplanes from the ripe old age of 3 years old, Dale never relinquished his dream of flying and filled his life with aviation. He earned his private pilot's license while putting himself through college. He completed the ROTC pilot program and graduated with a bachelor's degree in Forestry from Utah State University. He then joined the U.S. Air force to further his dreams of flight, he served our country as a pilot of KC135 tankers and earned the rank of Captain. After the Air Force, he joined Northwest Airlines 04-17-1967 as a commercial pilot. He spanned the globe for the next 30 years, logging thousands of hours in a variety of aircraft including the 727, DC1O, and 747. He safely carried thousands of people, countless amounts of cargo and sometimes even herds of cattle, safely to their destinations around the world. He retired after a long and distinguished career once again with the title of Captain Bosworth.

 

After retirement, his love of flight continued as a private pilot. In addition to covering the U.S. on countless adventures with his wife Nancy, he found a means to positively impact the lives of others by participating in the "Angel Flight" program where he flew medical patients from rural areas to hospitals and medical facilities all around the northwest. He logged enough hours to be awarded the Washington State Pilot of the year. His final distinction as an aviator was to join the UFO's (United Flying Octogenarians). Pilots who are still flying in their 80's are a rare breed, and he was proud to wrap up 60 years of aviation as a member of this organization.

 

A career in aviation meant traveling away from home for what totaled almost 6 months out of each year. Dale's dedication to his wife and family never wavered. Despite all the travel, he built the family home with his own hands, maintained a small farm, and managed to be there for his family continuously and especially when it mattered most. He is considered by all who knew him to be an exceptional person who will be greatly missed.

 

A memorial service in his honor will be held at 3:00 PM on April 27, 2025 at the Colbert Presbyterian Church, 4211 E Colbert Road, Colbert Washington.

DL Capt. Paul Michael Borgatti

Retired Delta Air Lines pilot Captain Paul Michael Borgatti, age 83, passed peacefully surrounded by family on January 22nd. Paul is survived by his wife Eleanor, and by his children and their families.  He joined Delta Air Lines 02-03-1969 and retired in 2001.  Paul was based 031/ATL at the time of his retirement.

Paul Michael Borgatti died peacefully surrounded by family on January 22, 2025. He was born in Naugatuck, Connecticut. He was the oldest child of Catherine and Hugo Borgatti. He is survived by his loving wife of 65 years, Eleanor Borgatti; his children, Tina Risher (William), Mike Borgatti (Katherine) and Maria Maginnis (David); his sister, Joan Bean, and brother, John Borgatti, eight grandchildren and six great grandchildren.

 

Paul graduated from St. Basil's Preparatory School in Connecticut and a graduate of the University of Connecticut. He earned his student pilot certificate in 1962 and began his journey of flight. He served in the Air Force and Louisiana Air National Guard and accumulated over 2300 hours of flying time before beginning his flying career of over 32 years with Delta Airlines.

 

He served in the Vietnam War from 1966-1967 and flew over 250 combat missions with over 600 hours of combat flying time. While in Vietnam he was awarded the purple heart, two silver stars, two distinguished flying crosses and twelve air medals.

 

During his tenure at Delta Airlines, he served on the Board of Directors of the Airline Pilot Association. He flew all over the world and finished his career as a captain of the Boeing 777.

 

He served as the Young Eagles coordinator for the Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA) Chapter 697. He flew over 200 students with the Young Eagles program giving them their first experiences of aviation. Paul had over 25,000 hours of flying time.

 

Aviation gave him the opportunity to meet people all over the world. He met presidents John F. Kennedy, Ronald Regan and George W. Bush. Others include Bob Hope, Harrison Ford and Joe DiMaggio as well as famous pilots like Chuck Yeager, Barron Hilton and Cliff Robertson. He spent hours with Bob Hoover talking about flying the F-100. He also flew with Francis "Gabby" Gabreski, who shot down over 25 planes during WWII. Flying gave him the opportunity to be interviewed on the 100th anniversary of Naval Aviation and was able to talk about the famous A-1E Skyraider, or as the Navy calls it, the AD-6, which he flew in Vietnam. He was given the honorary Navy Wings of Gold. Paul received the prestigious FAA Wright Brothers Award for 50 years of flight and was always ready to give encouragement and inspiration to help anyone begin their journey in aviation.

 

His greatest love was being with his wife and family. Together they had many wonderful adventures, which included traveling the world and supporting their children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren in all of their various activities. He was a man of faith and principle who led by example in everything he did. No honor was greater than being a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend.

 

Paul was an active member at Our Lady of the Lake Parish in Mandeville, serving many charitable organizations, including the Men's Club, the Knights of Columbus (Grand Knight and Faithful Navigator), and Eucharist Ministry to the local hospitals.

 

He loved his faith, his family, and his freedom, which he always reminded us that freedom does not come free but at the cost of young men and women that serve our country to protect that freedom. His enthusiasm, love of life and adventure will be greatly missed.

 

Relatives and friends are invited to attend services on Friday, February 14, 2025, at St. Joseph's Abbey Church at 2:00 PM. Visitation will be from 1:00 PM.-1:45 PM, followed by the Rosary from 1:45P.M.-2:00 PM. and a Funeral Mass at 2:00 PM. Interment will be private.

From family comes news with the passing of retired Delta pilot and Delta Golden Wings member Captain Robert “Bob” Burns Irwin, age 91.  Bob joined Delta Air Lines 04-17-1961 and retired in 1993.  Bob is survived by his children and their families.

Obituary :

Robert Burns Irwin (June 6, 1933-January 1, 2025) was born and raised in Ligonier, Pennsylvania to Boyd Sanner Irwin and Dorothy Mae Burns Irwin.  He went by many names, including “Bob”, “Moe”, “R.B.”, “Dad” and “Grandpa”.  When he was a youngster, Bob’s dad took him to a nearby airfield and treated him to a ride in an airplane.  This sparked his love of flying, and he immediately knew he wanted to become a pilot.  After graduation from Ligonier High School, he attended the United States Merchant Marine Academy in Kings Point, New York and graduated in 1956.

 

Bob then enlisted in the United States Navy, and was trained to fly airplanes off of aircraft carriers, primarily at Naval Air Station Pensacola.  While waiting for instruction time in the airplane, his buddies introduced him to the game of golf and it became a lifelong passion of his.  While in the Navy, he was stationed on the USS Wasp and the USS Intrepid.  He was honorably discharged from the Navy in 1959, and then served in the United State Navy Reserve at Dobbins Air Reserve Base in Marietta, Georgia until 1971. 

 

Bob was hired by Delta Air Lines in 1961, and was based in Atlanta, Houston, Dallas and Los Angeles while always maintaining his residence in Houston.  When anyone asked him how he liked being a pilot for Delta Air Lines, he would always say “I love it!  It’s like being paid to do a hobby.”  During his first years with Delta, he met the love of his life, Gray.  She was a beautiful Delta flight attendant who lived in his apartment complex.  They married in 1965 and raised two children together.

 

He was a member of Champions Golf Club in Houston, Texas for sixty years, where he practiced his passion for golf and made dear, lifelong friends. 

 

He was preceded in death by his wife of 32 years, Catherine Gray Embry Irwin, his parents, and his brother James Irwin, of Ligonier, Pennsylvania.

 

Bob is survived by his daughter Kristen Nixon and her husband, Lanny, who live in Atlanta, Georgia; his son Kevin Irwin and Kevin’s wife, Tawanna, and their children Layla and Ryder, who live in Aledo, Texas; his brother Bill Irwin and Bill’s wife, Jean, who live in Ligonier, Pennsylvania and Clermont, Florida; his niece Carol Darr and Carol’s husband, James, who live in Ligonier, Pennsylvania, and his nephew Scott Irwin and Scott’s wife, Polly, who live in Lancaster, Pennsylvania.

 

A memorial service in celebration of Bob’s life will be held at 2:00 on Monday, February 17, in the  Christ Chapel of St. Martin’s Episcopal Church, 717 Sage Road, Houston, Texas 77056.  To view the live stream of the service, go to https://stmartinsepiscopal.org/funerals/
