John Michael Murphy passed away
Saturday, October 12, 2013 at the age of 82. He was born on May 8, 1931 in
Morgantown, West Virginia to Michael Jennings and Dorothy (Sayer) Murphy.
John grew up in Morgantown and graduated from the University of West Virginia with a Bachelor’s Degree in Agriculture. He was a member of Phi Kappa Psi fraternity. He served with the U.S. Navy and Marine Air Force, where he was a jet pilot. He retired as a Captain from Delta Airlines.
John married Jane (Blount) Murphy on July 25, 1959 in Waynesboro, Georgia. They were happily married for 54 years.
John never met a stranger. He enjoyed the simple things in life, cheering for his Mountaineers, watching the news and sports, and spending time with his family.
John was preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Lucy Margaret; and his brother, James Sidney Murphy.
John is survived by his wife, Jane of Burton; son and daughter-in-law, Michael John and Kim Murphy of Burton; son and daughter-in-law, James Alden and Susan Murphy of Giddings; grandchildren: Jara, James, and Juliana Murphy of Burton; brother and sister-in-law, Joel and Esther Murphy of Lewes, Delaware; sister, Jane Brunson of Ellicott City, Maryland; sister, Ruth Mentzer of West Chester, Pennsylvania; sister and brother-in-law, Ann and Tom Nale of Kennett Square, Pennsylvania; sister and brother-in-law, Mary and John Schafer of Woodland Park, Colorado; and his loving nieces, nephews, and numerous other relatives.
John Michael Murphy will be laid to rest in a private family burial at Oak Rest Cemetery. A memorial service will be held at Brenham Presbyterian Church, 1005 Green Street, Brenham at 4:00 p.m. on Thursday, October 17, 2013.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be given to the Presbyterian Children’s Home and Services, 4407 Bee Cave Road, Suite 520, Austin, Texas 78746 or the Wounded Warrior Project, National Processing Center, P. O. Box 758517, Topeka, Kansas 66675-8517.
