___ PCN FLIGHT WEST is sponsored by the Pilot Communication Network and is a service of the PCN provided for the Delta Pilot Retired family of pilot groups. Flight West was started and is maintained to accomplish two main goals. After we become aware of a colleague who has Flown West, 1. We aim to produce a “timely” notice sent to our community that allows for support and interaction from our group toward the grieving family of our friend and colleague. 2. Then, we aim to “archive” that notice on our Flown West Blogspot as a lasting accessible place of Dignity and Honor of our colleague for family legacy and posterity. Contributor contact info is generally removed before posting (unless requested otherwise).

WA/DL Capt. Lawrence D. Olbright

Lawrence D. (Larry) Olbright

LAWRENCE D. OLBRIGHT (LARRY) Larry died November 4, at the age of 73 in Portland, Oregon. He had very recently been diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia (AML) and was undergoing treatment at Providence St. Vincent's Hospital in Portland. He passed away in his sleep with much of his family at his hospital bedside. Larry was born in Cleveland, Ohio and moved with his parents Edwin and Helen Olbright, and his siblings Diane and David, to Riverside, California in 1957. He graduated from Riverside Polytechnic H.S. and went on to graduate from Cal Poly, Pomona with a degree in Chemistry. Larry or "Lar" as he was often called, had many passions including volleyball, golf and fixing just about anything that was broken, but his real passion became flying. After college he joined the Air Force and following pilot training was sent to Vietnam. He was stationed in Saigon and flew C-130's from 1965 - 1967. He was then transferred to Travis Air Base in California from 1967 - 1969, flying C-141's carrying our troops to and from Vietnam. After his service in the U.S. Air Force, Larry joined Western Airlines, later acquired by Delta. He flew national and international flights (1972 - 2001) until his retirement from Delta in 2001 as a Captain. He leaves behind a loving wife, Patty (Sharp) Olbright, and two adoring children, his son Jason (wife Amy) and his daughter Eve (husband, Brad), as well as four grandchildren. He was an extraordinary husband, father, brother and grandfather and a steadfast friend to many. There will be a private service in Portland at the Willamette National Cemetery on November 20th and a family remembrance in Orange, California in 2016.

From Larry's son..................

Hello,
This is Jason, Larry's son. I have obtained your email from his computer. Please feel free to pass this along to anyone who may not already know.
It is with a heavy heart that I have to tell you that dad passed away at 11:30 PM, Wednesday, November 4th. Many of you may already know that he was admitted to the hospital 10/16 when they discovered he had developed Acute Myeloid Leukemia. They began treatment the following Monday. He did not survive the treatment.
I was with him along with my wife and sons (Amy, Kevin and Tyler). We had just finished saying goodnight and good-bye when he peacefully passed away. I had just told him that we would be OK and he was welcome to leave at any time to be with the Lord. He is in a better place.
We wanted to provide our thoughts regarding flowers and gifts. Please share this with anyone who asks.
In lieu of flowers and gifts, we as a family have decided we'd love to bless the wonderful hospital that has cared for Larry many times over the years.
